We quantify how the hip energetics and knee torque required for an above-knee prosthesis user to walk with the kinematics of able-bodied humans vary with the inertial properties of the prosthesis. We also select and optimize passive mechanical components for a prosthetic knee to accurately reproduce the required knee torque. Previous theoretical studies have typically investigated the effects o...

Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the reference standard method used to study bone mineral density (BMD) after total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, the subtle, spatially complex changes in bone mass due to strain-adaptive bone remodeling relevant to different prosthesis designs are not readily resolved using conventional DXA analysis. DXA region free analysis (DXA RFA) is a novel comp...

The design and evaluation of a robotic prosthesis for a drummer with a transradial amputation is presented. The principal objective of the prosthesis is to simulate the role fingers play in drumming. This primarily includes controlling the manner in which the drum stick rebounds after initial impact. This is achieved using a DC motor driven by a variable impedance control framework in a shared ...

In this paper we analyze the anatomic elements that compose the human knee joint. Also, we build the spatial model of the human knee joint components. This study is necessary for the design of prosthesis elements and for the establishment of the necessary prosthesis technique.

STUDY DESIGN Biomechanical analysis of a novel prosthesis based on the physiological curvature of endplate was performed. OBJECTIVE To compare the biomechanical differences between a novel prosthesis based on the physiological curvature of the endplate and the Prestige LP prosthesis after cervical disc replacement (CDR). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Artificial disc prostheses have been widely...

This article describes the fabrication of a screw-retained, implant-supported wax pattern that enables the restorative dentist to predict the outcome of the final prosthesis. The wax pattern also affords the patient an opportunity to evaluate and approve the design of the planned prosthesis, thereby enhancing communication between the dentist and patient.

Positioning handles and occlusal locks have evolved as improvements to the Teeth-in-a-Day protocol. These improvements have enabled a more accurate alignment of the removable dental prosthesis during the conversion prosthesis technique. These improvements can be easily incorporated through computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing digital denture fabrication process.

The first part of this paper reviews different approaches to define the motion of the fingers and the thumb in order to obtain prehension. The last part presents the design of a hand prosthesis based on a new plane of action for the thumb and on proposed design specifications and functional characteristics. The design methodology consists of two steps: the morphology design of the hand prosthes...

The design of a custom hip implant can be broken up into several distinct phases which can be carried out by separate toolkits which specialize in the service needed for each stage. We describe a client-server environment in which multiple experts can collaborate in the implant design process and shape optimization, while computations for modelling the femur, simulating loading conditions, and ...

This report describes a pilot study made as a starting point for the functional specification of powered upper-limb prostheses. A list of tasks, intended to cover all the activities of normal adult daily life (excluding jobs or recreations), was compiled. They were scored by a small group of able-bodied subjects for importance in independent living, so that design analysis would be simplified b...
