Environmental and processing factors affecting the biostability of medical devices made from traditionally "stable" polymers, such as isotactic polypropylene (PP) and ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) , were analyzed and their undesirable degradation was related to performance of typical medical devices. Among the critical phenomena determining the biological performance of UHMW...

This paper describes the fabrication of novel modified polyethylene (PE) membranes using plasma technology to create high-performance and cost-effective separator membranes for practical applications in lithium-ion polymer batteries. The modified PE membrane via plasma modification process plays a critical role in improving wettability and electrolyte retention, interfacial adhesion between sep...

INTRODUCTION: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has become a standard operative procedure to relieve pain and restore function in patients with osteoarthritis. Polyethylene (Pe) mobile bearing (MB) inserts have been developed to minimize implant wear, prolong prosthesis survival and evoke less anterior knee pain due to better self-alignment. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical, radiol...

Polyethylene (PE) is a nonpolar partially crystalline polymer. The crystalline regions have lateral dimension of several hundred Angstroms and are embeded in an amorphous polymer matrix. Crystalline polyethylene belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system with point group D21~. In the far infrared spectral region PE shows a strong absorption line at 73 cm -1 and a very weak band at 109 cm -1, wh...

A novel one-pot methodology combining anionic polymerization and polyhomologation, through a "bridge" molecule (BF3OEt2), was developed for the synthesis of polyethylene (PE)-based block copolymers. The anionically synthesized macroanion reacts with the "bridge" molecule to afford a 3-arm star (trimacromolecular borane) which serves as an initiator for the polyhomologation.

The types of packages and containers in circulation are extremely wide-ranging: glass bottles, aluminum cans, detergent containers, gift-wraps, food packaging films and so forth. According to the statistics for 2007, total expenditure on packages and containers reached 6.2 trillion yen 1). The theme of this article, extrusion lamination processing, plays an important role in manufacturing paper...

Jute fiber/polyethylene biocomposites were prepared using a hot press molding technique. The effects of maleic anhydride, clay, and silica on the physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of jute fiber-reinforced polyethylene (PE) biocomposites with different fiber loadings (5, 10, 15, and 20 wt.%) were investigated. The biocomposites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectros...

Relevance to Musculoskeletal condition: Polyethylene debris induce osteolysis which leads to aseptic loosening of total joint prostheses. Recently, new articulation such as alumina on alumina in total joint arthroplasty has been developed. We investigate whether alumina particles stimulate osteoclastic bone resorption using in vitro bone resorption assay that we developed. Introduction: It has ...

This paper examines polymer film morphology and several important properties of polyethylene-graft-sulfonated polyarylene ether sulfone (PE-g-s-PAES) proton exchange membranes (PEMs) for direct methanol fuel cell applications. Due to the extreme surface energy differences between a semi-crystalline and hydrophobic PE backbone and several amorphous and hydrophilic s-PAES side chains, the PE-g-s-...

The size effect on mechanical properties of glassy polyethylene (PE) nanoscale particles has been investigated by extensive coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. The diameter of the PE particles varies in the range of 5-40 nm, we confirm that the particle's behaviour under compressive stress strongly depends on its size-the smaller the particle diameter is, the stiffer the particle beh...
