BACKGROUND Four traditional Korean medicinal herbs which act in retarding the aging process, Polygonum multiflorum Thunb., Rehmannia glutinosa (Gaertn) Libosch., Polygala tenuifolia Willd., and Acorus gramineus Soland., were prepared by systematic investigation of Dongeuibogam (Treasured Mirror of Eastern Medicine), published in the early 17th century in Korea. This study was performed to evalu...

Finite PMC surfaces have been analyzed with the help of a commercial software. The PMC effect is illustrated and the amplitude of successive evanescent waves is analyzed. It is found that the evanescent waves, as well as the effects of array truncation, are the strongest near the PMC. The evanescent waves may have a strong impact on the reactive component of antennas placed near the surface.

Although most brain cells are postmitotic, small populations of progenitor or stem cells can divide throughout life. These cells are believed to be the most likely source for primary brain malignancies including gliomas. Such tumors share many common features with nonmalignant glial cells but, because of their insidious growth, form cancers that are typically incurable. In studying the growth r...

s indicate that species names are more likely to be mentioned in the main body. As with the MeSH and Entrez Gene document sets, precision values are of low relevance due to the evaluation set not including all species mentions. 2.4.3.5 PubMed Central linkouts Performance of LINNAEUS compared to PMC linkouts reveals recall levels similar to those obtained on the EMBL document set, but lower than...

In the sea urchin embryo, primary mesenchyme cells (PMCs) adhere to one another and fuse via filopodia, forming cable-like structures within which skeletal rods are deposited. Although this process was first described more than a century ago, molecules that participate in PMC adhesion and fusion have not been identified. Here we show that KirrelL, a PMC-specific, Ig domain-containing transmembr...

The present study demonstrates that human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PMC) can be stimulated in vitro to become cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) by PHA. A significant cytotoxic activity of PMC was detected 48 hr after the culture initiation in the presence of 5 micrograms/ml of PHA and the peak level of the activity was obtained by culturing PMC for 72 hr. The cytotoxic cells require the p...

Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is a debilitating disorder occurring in most diabetic patients without a viable treatment yet. The present work examined the protective effect of (25)Mg-PMC(16) nanoparticle (porphyrin adducts of cyclohexil fullerene-C60) in a rat model of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced DN. (25)Mg-PMC(16) (0.5 lethal dose(50) [LD(50)]) was administered intravenously in two consecutive day...
