BACKGROUND/AIM Retention of fissure sealants and good adaptation to enamel are essential for their success. Fluoride releasing resin-based materials are widely accepted for pit and fissure sealing, but newly designed glass ionomers can serve as a good alternative. The aim of this study was to evaluate microleakage and sealing ability in vitro, and to clinically assess two fluoride releasing fis...

This study recorded and compiled the retention rate of sealants placed by Air Force dental technicians over a two-year period. The technicians, who were equivalent to dental assistants, were trained to place the sealants without assistance using the Vac-Ejector (Whaledent International, New York, NY) s...

OBJECTIVES The introduction of fluoride releasing sealants and glass ionomer cements as fissure sealants adds another dimension to prevention of pit and fissure caries. The ability of resin sealants and glass ionomer cements to release fluoride on a long term basis to the sealed enamel and the adjacent unsealed pit and fissure and cuspal incline enamel may allow for further reduction in pit and...

becoming available, as well as results from long-term clinical trials, a great deal of evidence has accumulated to support the clinical efficacy of pit and fissure sealants. Since smooth surfaces benefit most, and occlusal surfaces the least from the use of fluorides, an alternative technique which prevents occlusal caries can make a major impact on overall caries reduction when used in conjunc...

While sealants are more effective than fluoride varnish in reducing the development of new carious lesions on occlusal surfaces, and a course of treatment requires fewer clinical visits, they are more expensive per application. This analysis assessed which treatment is more cost-effective. We estimate the costs of sealants and fluoride varnish over a 4-year period in a school-based setting, and...

Two patients underwent arthroscopy-guided injections of autologous fibrin sealants to treat ganglion cysts causing suprascapular nerve palsies. After at least 2 years of follow-up, both patients had no suprascapular nerve symptoms and their external rotation strength had returned to normal. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed no evidence of ganglion cyst recurrence.
