Thirty isolates of the yeast form of Sporothrix schenckii were evaluated for in vitro susceptibility to itraconazole and terbinafine by the recommended NCCLS modified technique (M27-A2). The MICs of itraconazole obtained oscillated between 0.062 and 4.0 microg/ml, and those of terbinafine oscillated between 0.007 and 0.50 microg/ml; therefore, terbinafine showed greater in vitro activity.

Onychomycosis is a disease that is important to our patients. Based on the current literature, recent developments of newer antifungal agents have improved cure rates of onychomycosis in the past few years (Table 3). No significant differences in safety and tolerability between itraconazole and terbinafine exist. Terbinafine does appear to have a preferable drug interaction profile. Daily thera...

We investigated the in vitro interaction of terbinafine with itraconazole, fluconazole, amphotericin B and 5-flucytosine, against Aspergillus spp. We tested three isolates of Aspergillus fumigatus (one resistant to itraconazole), and two each of Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus terreus. We employed a broth microdilution-based method derived from an in vivo validated method ...

Terbinafine is increasingly used in combination with other antifungal agents to treat resistant or refractory mycoses due to synergistic in vitro antifungal activity; high doses are commonly used, but limited data are available on systemic exposure, and no assessment of pharmacodynamic target attainment has been made. Using a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model for terbinafine, t...
