Accurate wavelength assignment of each spectral element for spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and optical frequency domain imaging (OFDI) is required for proper construction of biological tissue cross-sectional images. This becomes more critical for functional extensions of these techniques, especially in polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT), where in...

Introduction/aims Optical biopsy systems have been investigated for various clinical applications; however the main interest remains in the diagnosis and monitoring of premalignant and malignant conditions. In this study, we compared findings of optical coherence tomography (OCT) with histopathology results of suspicious oral lesions to assess the feasibility of OCT in identifying pathological ...

Bonding has become a routine procedure in several dental specialties – from prosthodontics to conservative dentistry and even orthodontics. In many of these fields it is important to be able to investigate the bonded interfaces to assess their quality. All currently employed investigative methods are invasive, meaning that samples are destroyed in the testing procedure and cannot be used again....

Studying hemodynamic changes during early mammalian embryonic development is critical for further advances in prevention, diagnostics, and treatment of congenital cardiovascular (CV) birth defects and diseases. Doppler optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been shown to provide sensitive measurements of blood flow in avian and amphibian embryos. We combined Doppler swept-source optical coheren...

We report a case of widespread unilateral drusen in a healthy 31 year old Caucasian woman using multi-modal imaging including ultra-high resolution optical coherence tomography (UHR-OCT). Dilated fundus exam showed multiple drusen-like lesions in the posterior pole without heme or fluid. Fundus auto fluorescence demonstrated hyperautofluorescent at the deposits. Fluorescein angiography revealed...

We propose a new technique, called quantum optical coherence tomography (QOCT), for carrying out tomographic measurements with dispersioncancelled resolution. The technique can also be used to extract the frequencydependent refractive index of the medium. QOCT makes use of a two-photon interferometer in which a swept delay permits a coincidence interferogram to be traced. The technique bears a ...

Evaluation of molar dental restorations on enamel is performed using optical coherence tomography (OCT) with 10 microm resolution. Images of approximately 50 microm failure gaps in the restorations are demonstrated and the OCT images are compared with x-ray and optical microscopy pictures. The results demonstrate the potential of the technique for clinical evaluation of dental restorations.

Segmentation of optical coherence tomography (OCT) cross-sectional structural images is important for assisting ophthalmologists in clinical decision making in terms of both diagnosis and treatment. We present an automatic approach for segmenting intramacular layers in Fourier domain optical coherence tomography (FD-OCT) images using a searching strategy based on locally weighted gradient extre...

Cochlear implantation is now being performed in ears with residual hearing. Those implant recipients who keep residual hearing may benefit from improved pitch resolution through both electrical and acoustic hearing. Preservation of cochlear function after implantation is a challenging task for the surgeon. Current topics of hearing preservation research include electrode design and surgical tec...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate macular changes in eyes with papilledema from increased intracranial pressure using optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS Fifty-five patients with papilledema seen during 1998 and 1999 were studied with OCT of the optic nerve and retinal nerve fiber layer. Nineteen of these also had OCT of the macula during periods of acute, subacute, or recurrent papilledema and w...
