Ultra high bandwidth properties of fiber-optic signal processing systems could provide the necessary processing power for computationally demanding two-dimensional signal processing applications. The techniques of fiber-optic signal processing so far have not been applied to the area of two-dimensional signal processing. Further the matured fields of integrated optics and integrated photonics a...

THE HUMAN VISUAL SYSTEM COMPRISES ELONGATED FIBER PATHWAYS THAT REPRESENT A SERIOUS CHALLENGE FOR DIFFUSION TENSOR IMAGING (DTI) AND FIBER TRACTOGRAPHY: while tracking of frontal fiber bundles may be compromised by the nearby presence of air-filled cavities, nerves, and eye muscles, the anatomic courses of the three main fiber bundles of the optic radiation are subject to pronounced inter-subje...

The fiber optics and optoelectronics industry has experienced a tremendous amount of innovation over the past four decades. Initially conceived for medical endoscopic applications, optical fibers were considered in the mid-1960s as an adequate technology for telecommunications applications. Since then, light wave communications systems have become the preferred and standard method to transmit v...

Optical fiber arrays provide a powerful substrate for creating high-density sensing systems that can address a variety of biological problems. The fiber substrate can be used to create femtoliter wells that can be loaded with individual beads to create high-density arrays for multiplexed screening and analysis. In addition, living cells can be loaded into the arrays, and their individual respon...

Photonic sensors, signal processors and communication technologies have emerged as viable alternatives to electronics. Fiber optic sensors which can readily be integrated with smart materials and structures offer an immense potential in the realization of intelligent systems. This paper presents an overview of different types of fiber optic sensors and their application to smart structures.

In fiber-optic systems with multiple channels or subcarriers, any three channels create new signal components through the nonlinear process of Four-Wave-Mixing (FWM). For the first time, to our best knowledge, we calculate the number of these products for each frequency. The results can be useful for nonlinear system analysis of multiplexed fiber-optic communication systems.
