In this special issue, guest edited by Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli and Luciano Lavagno, the readers get an excellent view of the issues, challenges, and trends in on-chip integration within the emerging field of complex system-ona-chip (SOC) design. These articles come from presentations at a Project Madess workshop in Rome. Madess stands for Materiali e Dispositivi per l’Elettronica dello ...

In Model-Based Diagnosis there is an increasing interest in the diagnosis of dynamic systems. Some recent contributions in the literature show that in some cases such systems can be diagnosed with pure state-based diagnosis, i.e. reasoning on single states of the system rather than on transitions of the system from one state to another. In this work we discuss how in a different context the sam...

Consequences of the interference between spectator amplitudes for the lifetimes and semileptonic decay fractions of B and B mesons are discussed. Extracting these amplitudes from a fit to 11 exclusive hadronic B decay fractions we find a1 = 1.05 ± 0.03 ± 0.10, a2 = +0.227 ± 0.012 ± 0.022, an inclusive semileptonic decay fraction of (11.2 ± 0.5 ± 1.7)%, and a lifetime ratio τ(B)/τ(B) = 0.83± 0.0...

We propose a formal procedure-based agent model for plan recognition as an alternative to the declarative proposition-based agent model. Our formalism, called the Procedural Agent Model (PAM) allows us to describe procedural plans of agents in a concise and abstract way. Plan recognition uses PAM as a library of plan schemas and applies a graph-based pattern-matching algorithm to the observed e...

Modern state is conceptually and subjectively complicated as per the wide range of concepts and subjects related to it, therefore the context is provided to present the viewpoints on its identity and nature. Based on this, human sciences Scientifics investigate it from different perspectives. Complexity of the nature of modern State, arises the various theories around it, despite bring serious ...

Is government ideology important for fiscal policy? I study this question with data from all German States over the period 1975-2005. To identify the effect of ideology, I rely on a fuzzy regression discontinuity design. I find that left-wing state governments spend more than state governments with right-wing and mixed ideology. Deficits of left-wing governments are larger than those of right-w...

In contrast to bulk MOSFETs, in UTB devices using SOI substrates, also the geometrical confinement yields quantization. This strongly affects the local density of states, and gives rise to quasi-bound states (QBS), hence the assumption of a continuum of states is no longer valid. Each QBS gives rise to a tunneling current which follows from the number of electrons occupying the state over the c...

Exact solutions are presented for Burgers’ equation in a fmite layer connected to an underlying semi-infinite medium of different conductivity and diffusivity. A constant-flux boundary condition is assumed at the surface. This has direct application to steady rainfall on layered field soils. At large times, a travelling wave profile develops in the deep layer and the concentration in the upper ...

The lifetime of a solid-state drive (SSD) is limited because of the number of program and erase cycles allowed on its NAND flash blocks. Data cannot be overwritten in an SSD, leading to an out-of-place update every time the data are modified. This result in two copies of the data: the original copy and a modified copy. This phenomenon is known as write amplification and adversely affects the en...

We study the Cauchy problem ut = uxx + f (u) (t > 0, x ∈ R1), u(0, x) = u0(x) (x ∈ R1), where f (u) is a locally Lipschitz continuous function satisfying f (0) = 0. We show that any nonnegative bounded solution with compactly supported initial data converges to a stationary solution as t → ∞. Moreover, the limit is either a constant or a symmetrically decreasing stationary solution. We also con...
