The distal nephron, which is the site of the micro-regulation of water absorption and ion handling in the kidneys, is under the control of aldosterone. Impairment of the mineralocorticoid signal transduction pathway results in resistance to the action of aldosterone and of mineralocorticoids in general. Herein, we review two syndromes in which ion handling in the distal nephron is impaired: pse...

For adaptation to high-salinity marine environments, cartilaginous fishes (sharks, skates, rays, and chimaeras) adopt a unique urea-based osmoregulation strategy. Their kidneys reabsorb nearly all filtered urea from the primary urine, and this is an essential component of urea retention in their body fluid. Anatomical investigations have revealed the extraordinarily elaborate nephron system in ...

The electrogenic Na(+)-HCO3 (-) cotransporter 2 (NBCe2) is a newly discovered protein in the distal nephron. Our understanding is minimal regarding its physiological role in renal electrolyte transport. In this mini-review, we summarize the potential function of NBCe2 in the regulation of blood pressure, acid-base, and K(+) and Ca(2+) transport in the distal nephron.

The hydatid cyst is a frequent pathology in India. Liver commonly involved (65%) followed by lungs (25%); muscles (5%); bones (3%) [1]. However, renal still rare. It constitutes about 2.5 % of all localizations. may create diagnostic dilemma at times. We describe 55-year-old female with left disease managed enucleation nephron sparing surgery (NSS).

The epithelial cell tight junction has several functions including the control of paracellular transport between epithelial cells. Renal paracellular transport has been long recognized to exhibit unique characteristics within different segments of the nephron, functions as an important component of normal renal physiology and has been speculated to contribute to renal related pathology if funct...

The nephron is the basic structural and functional unit of the vertebrate kidney. To ensure kidney functions, the nephrons possess a highly segmental organization where each segment is specialized for the secretion and reabsorption of particular solutes. During embryogenesis, nephron progenitors undergo a mesenchymal-to-epithelial transition (MET) and acquire different segment-specific cell fat...
