At a clinic in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, we observed an increase in Neisseria gonorrhoeae-negative men with suspected gonococcal urethritis who had urethral cultures positive for N. meningitidis. We describe genomes of 2 of these N. meningitidis sequence type 11 complex urethritis isolates. Clinical evidence suggests these isolates may represent an emerging urethrotropic clade.

New York City medium and New York City medium without hemoglobin were comparatively evaluated for their ability to support the growth of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolated from 1,010 clinical specimens. Although hemoglobin in the form of lysed horse erythrocytes stimulated gonococcal growth, the absence of this component from New York City medium did not have a detrimental effect on the recovery of...

The conjunctivitis produced by Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the less frequently reported clinical form of gonococcal infection. We aim to phenotypically characterize N. gonorrhoeae isolated from conjunctivae sites. A total of six cases of this disease were notified in the Camagüey province, Cuba. All the strains isolated were penicillin-producing, showed the serogroup WI and exhibited the same anti...

The chemical composition and serological properties of endotoxin prepared from gonococci by extraction with aqueous ether have been described in previous reports (Maeland, 1969b, 1969c). Aqueous ether endotoxin contains one antigenic determinant of carbohydrate nature (determinant a) and another antigenic determinant of protein nature (determinant b) (Maeland, 1968, 1969a). A serological test s...

Transgrow medium was developed by Martin and Lester (1971) as a combined transport and culture medium for N. gonorrhoeae and N. meningitidis. It has since become widely used in the United States, where it is considered to be an important aid in the diagnosis of gonorrhoea in patients attending clinics which are remote from a laboratory. Certain of the ingredients of Transgrow are difficult to o...

Infection with two strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae was found in paired cultures from 8.7% (6/69) of women who had infections of the cervix, rectum, or urethra. Paired gonococcal cultures from each patient were characterised by auxotyping, susceptibility to four antibiotics, and acrylamide gel electrophoresis patterns of the gonococcal cell proteins.

THE synergistic action of the combination ofsulphonamides and 2-4-diamino-pyrimidine compounds against the gonococcus has been demonstrated clinically by Csonka and Knight (1967). It was decided to reassess the clinical efficacy of the combination of trimethoprim with sulphamethoxazole* in gonorrhoea, to examine its mode of action, and to compare the effect of a combination of another pyrimidin...

Background. Progressive resistance to antimicrobial agents has reduced options for gonorrhea therapy worldwide. Solithromycin (CEM-101) is a novel oral fluoroketolide antimicrobial with substantial in vitro activity against Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Methods. We conducted a phase 2 trial of 2 oral doses of solithromycin (1200 and 1000 mg) for treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea. Results. A total o...

Etiology, transmission and protection: Neisseria gonorrhoeae (the gonococcus) is the etiological agent for the strictly human sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea. Infections lead to limited immunity, therefore individuals can become repeatedly infected. Pathology/symptomatology: Gonorrhea is generally a non-complicated mucosal infection with a pustular discharge. More severe sequellae includ...

Background and Objectives: In the recent decade, resistance of neisseria gonorrhea has increased as a result of vast and improper consumption of antibiotics. Moreover lack of information about the last patterns of antibiotic resistance and the way of development and transmission of this resistance is a great challenge to treatments of infections from these bacteria. This study was performed in ...
