The accessory navicular is one of the most symptomatic bones of the foot. Osteonecrosis and fracture of this bone have been previously described. We report a case of osteomyelitis of an accessory navicular bone in a young girl, to make treating clinicians aware of this rare possibility.
The etiopathogenesis and radiographic features of navicular syndrome remain controversial. However, as our knowledge of pathophysiology increases, better decisions regarding radiographic interpretation are made. Employment of magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography will lead to earlier, more accurate diagnosis of navicular syndrome. Authors’ address: School of Veterinary Medicine, 12...

Despite thousands, or perhaps millions, of words, navicular disease remains a subject of confusion and error. I have written as clearly as I can on the subject, defining what the condition actually is and how it may develop. My opinions are based on years of observation, primarily in the postmortem room, together with some in vitro studies. [1,2] While it might be convenient to have all that re...
High field strength MRI is an effective method for diagnosing injury to structures within the feet of horses with navicular syndrome. The prevalence of different pathologies was determined in 151 horses with normal radiographs but clinical signs of bilateral navicular syndrome. BACKGROUND Accessory navicular can become symptomatic in childhood, and in some cases, the condition is associated with progressive flattening of the longitudinal arch. Moreover, some severe, rigid flatfoot deformities are associated with an accessory navicular. We investigated the results of concomitant calcaneo-cuboid-cuneiform osteotomies (triple C) and the modified Kidner procedure for seve...
