OBJECTIVE Our goal was to determine the in vitro susceptibility of Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis isolates to several antibiotics in Argentina. METHODS Ninety-four strains of U. urealyticum and 18 strains of M. hominis isolated from cervical and urethral specimens were studied. Broth microdilution and agar dilution tests for minocycline, tetracycline, erythromycin, ciprofloxaci...

Sir, The first paper clearly defining the genus Blastocystis as a distinct organism was presented by Alexeieff (1) in 1911, who proposed the name Blastocystis enterocola. The name Blastocystis hominis was proposed by Brumpt (2), and this is the name utilized in the current literature. B. hominis is now regarded as an intestinal protozoan that seems not merely to be a commensal organism, but sho...

Purged stools from 389 patients were evaluated microscopically for the presence of Blastocystis hominis. A total of five or more B. hominis cells per 40X field were observed in 43 patients (11%), and B. hominis was the only intestinal parasite present in 23 (6%) of these patients. Of the 23 patients, 19 had symptoms which included abdominal discomfort (15 patients), anorexia (10 patients), diar...

INTRODUCTION Mycoplasma hominis is mostly known for causing urogenital infections. However, it has rarely been described as an agent of brain abscess. CASE PRESENTATION We describe a case of M. hominis brain abscess in a 41-year-old Caucasian woman following uterus curettage. The diagnosis was obtained by 16S rDNA amplification, cloning and sequencing from the abscess pus, and confirmed by a ...

Four Cryptosporidium spp. and 6 C. hominis subtypes were isolated from 102 of 6,284 patients in 3 pediatric hospitals in People's Republic of China. A cryptosporidiosis outbreak was identified retrospectively. The outbreak lasted >1 year and affected 51.4% of patients in 1 hospital ward, where 2 C. hominis subtypes with different virulence were found.

The in vitro activities of magainin analogs against Blastocystis hominis, Entamoeba histolytica, and Trypanosoma cruzi were assessed by protozoan morphological integrity and motility. The antiprotozoan activities in descending order were magainin B greater than G greater than H, the same order as the alpha-helix contents of the analogs. Magainin B and G were effective against B. hominis, T. cru...

BACKGROUND Among Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci (CoNS), Staphylococcus hominis represents the third most common organism recoverable from the blood of immunocompromised patients. The aim of this study was to characterize biofilm formation, antibiotic resistance, define the SCCmec (Staphylococcal Chromosomal Cassette mec) type, and genetic relatedness of clinical S. hominis isolates. METHODO...

The performance of a new commercial PCR-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) (Cryptodiag; Bio Advance, France) for the diagnosis of cryptosporidiosis and the identification of Cryptosporidium hominis and C. parvum from stool samples was examined. This test is based on PCR amplification of Cryptosporidium DNA extracted from stools, followed by an ELISA based on hybridization with Cryptospor...

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) act on genital systems and may affect female and male reproductive functions in three different ways, through the obstruction of either male or female reproductive ducts, a significant contribution to perinatal morbidity, mortality, and pregnancy wastage [1]. Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis are known as sexually transmitted agents. Although U. ...

The aim of present study was to evaluate the occurrence of Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma hominis, and Ureaplasma urealyticum in non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) and to determine the bacterial resistance to six antibiotics in order to determine the most suitable treatment strategy. A total of 50 patients were enrolled into the study. Urethral samples were taken with a dacron swab placed into ...
