The Revo:oveR installation is a collection of six co-located installations exploring multimodal interaction, self-evolving aural and visual fabric, integration of architectural space, and the notion of communal art. The interactive aural communal soundscape Elemental and one of the two physical sculptures titled Cyrene Reefs exhibited at NIME 2009 can be seen as the core aural components of the...
Music is generally associated with the artistic expression of emotions, but it is clear that reason plays an important role in music making. For example, the ability to recognise musical patterns and to make structural abstractions and associations requires sophisticated memory mechanisms, involving the conscious manipulation of concepts and subconscious access to intuitive knowledge. One of th...
In this paper we discuss the concept of style, focusing in particular on methods of designing new instruments that facilitate the cultivation and recognition of style. We distinguish between style and structure of an interaction and discuss the significance of this formulation within the context of NIME. Two workshops that were conducted to explore style in interaction design are described, fro...
The development of new interfaces for musical expression has created a need to study how spectators comprehend new performance technologies and practices. As part of a larger project examining how interactions with technology can be communicated with the spectator, we relate our model of spectator understanding of error to the NIME discourse surrounding transparency, mapping, skill and success.
The new field of mobile music emerges at the intersection of ubiquitous computing, portable audio technology and NIME. We have held a series of international workshop on this topic with leading projects and speakers, in order to establish a community and stimulate the development of the field. In this report, we define mobile music, and map out the field by reporting on the workshop series and ...
The Electromagnetically Sustained Rhodes Piano is an original Rhodes Piano modified to provide control over the amplitude envelope of individual notes through aftertouch pressure. Although there are many opportunities to shape the amplitude envelope before loudspeaker amplification, they are all governed by the ever-decaying physical vibrations of the tone generating mechanism. A single-note pr...
Background in music theory/analysis. Musical analysis focuses primarily on aspects of compositional design, mathematical/formal relations between musical materials or on musical theoretic forms and functions that have been established as musicologically pertinent through the centuries (e.g., traditional harmonic analysis, Schenkerian analysis). Listeners’ perception is not usually the explicit ...
Musical robots provide artists and musicians with the ability to realise complex new musical ideas in real acoustic space. However, most musical robots are created with openloop control systems, many of which require time consuming calibration and do not reach the level of reliability of other electronic musical instruments such as synthesizers. This paper outlines the construction of a new rob...
In two studies, we explored the frequency and phenomenology of musical imagery. Study 1 used retrospective reports of musical imagery to assess the contribution of individual differences to imagery characteristics. Study 2 used an experience sampling design to assess the phenomenology of musical imagery over the course of one week in a sample of musicians and non-musicians. Both studies found e...
The relationship between self-concept and societal settings has been widely investigated in several Western and Asian countries, with respect to the academic self-concept in an educational environment. Although the musical self-concept is highly relevant to musical development and performance, there is a lack of research exploring how the musical self-concept evolves in different cultural setti...
