To resolve the phylogeny of certain mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroups in eastern Europe and estimate their evolutionary age, a total of 73 samples representing mitochondrial haplogroups U4, HV*, and R1 were selected for complete mitochondrial genome sequencing from a collection of about 2,000 control region sequences sampled in eastern (Russians, Belorussians, and Ukrainians) and western (P...

Loss of Abf2p, an abundant mitochondrial nucleoid-associated protein, results in increased mitochondrial frameshifts and direct-repeat mediated deletions but has no effect on the rate of mitochondrial point mutations. The instability of repeated sequences in this strain may be linked to the loss of mitochondrial DNA in abf2-Delta strains.

Previous analyses suggested that the Nicotiana sylvestris CMSII mutant carried a large deletion in its mitochondrial genome. Here, we show by cosmid mapping that the deletion is 60 kb in length and contains several mitochondrial genes or ORFs, including the complex I nad7 gene. However, due to the presence of large duplications in the progenitor mitochondrial genome, the only unique gene that a...

Mitochondria have emerged as key players regarding cellular homeostasis not only due to their contribution regarding energy production through oxidative phosphorylation, but also due to their involvement in signaling, ion regulation, and programmed cell death. Indeed, current knowledge supports the notion that mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark in the pathogenesis of various diseases. Mito...

a specific polymerase chain reaction (pcr) method was applied for identification of bovine (bos taurus), ovine (ovis aries) and caprine (capra hircus) pure and binary mixtures of raw and heat-processed meats. these meats are used in food industry products and/or for direct consumption of consumers. the mitochondrial dna was amplified as a template in a pcr reaction by use of specific primers re...

We recently described a new component (TAC102) of the mitochondrial genome segregation machinery (mtGSM) in the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma brucei. T. brucei belongs to a group of organisms that contain a single mitochondrial organelle with a single mitochondrial genome (mt-genome) per cell. The mt-genome consists of 5000 minicircles (1 kb) and 25 maxicircles (23 kb) that are catenated into ...

The study of genetic disease is often centered on the human nuclear genome consisting of ~3.1 billion nucleotides and 25,000–30,000 genes located on the 23 pairs of chromosomes, whereas the mitochondrial genome has received less attention. Each cell contains numerous mitochondria and each mitochondrion contains several copies of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Thus, a cell contains several thousand ...

The nematode Romanomermis culicivorax, an obligate mosquito parasite, possesses a 26 kilobase (kb) mitochondrial genome. The unusually large size is due to transcriptionally active DNA sequences present as 3.0 kb direct tandem repeats and as inverted portions of the repeating unit located elsewhere in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). The genome rearrangements involved in establishing this unusual...
