We present experimental results and computer modeling on the optical properties of the human scleral tissue. The wavelength dependence of the refractive index of collagen fibers in the human scleral tissue was estimated on the base of Mie theory. Dispersion formula describing this dependence was derived. The results are general and can be used to describe optical properties of many other fibrou...
We describe results of calibration experiments using a new angle-resolved low coherence interferometry system. Light scattered from a polystyrene microsphere sample are compared with Mie Theory predictions to determine the size of the particles. © 2003 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: Low coherence interferometry, light scattering spectroscopy.
We used in-line holography to create images of individual milk fat globules in diluted samples of milk. Analyzing these images with the exact Lorenz-Mie light scattering theory then yields the droplets' radii with nanometer resolution and their refractive indexes to within one part in a thousand. This procedure rapidly and directly characterizes both the quantity and quality of fat in milk.
We use digital holographic microscopy and Mie scattering theory to simultaneously characterize and track individual colloidal particles. Each holographic snapshot provides enough information to measure a colloidal sphere's radius and refractive index to within 1%, and simultaneously to measure its three-dimensional position with nanometer in-plane precision and 10 nanometer axial resolution.
Initiation of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) productive infection is dependent on the major immediate early (MIE) genes ie1 and ie2. Several putative binding sites for CCAAT displacement protein (CDP or CUX1) were identified within the MIE promoter/regulatory region. Binding assays demonstrated binding of CUX1 to MIE-region oligonucleotides containing the CUX1 core binding sequence ATCGAT and mut...
Approximations to the Mie–series are fundamental in many applications. In particular, for validation of efficient electromagnetic scattering algorithms (to compute the radar cross section of three dimensional targets) or to understand the electromagnetic scattering by rain drops, it is important to evaluate the Mie–series with accuracy close to machine precision. In this paper, we propose a qua...
Electronic topological states of matter exhibit novel types responses to electromagnetic fields. The response strong insulators, for instance, is characterized by a so-called axion term in the Lagrangian which ultimately due presence surface states. Here we develop Mie theory spherical particles including arbitrary sources fields, i.e., charge and current distributions. We derive an induced mix...
Esophagectomy is a complex operation with significant morbidity and mortality. Minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) was described in the 1990s in an effort to reduce operative morbidity. Since then many institutions have adopted and described their series with this technique. This paper reviews the literature on the variety of MIE techniques, clinical and quality of life outcomes with open ve...
Since its introduction in the People's Republic of China in 1992, minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) has shown the classical advantages of minimally invasive surgery over its open counterpart. Like all pioneers of the technique, cardiothoracic surgeons in the People's Republic of China claim that MIE has a lower risk of pulmonary infection, faster recovery, a shorter hospital stay, and a mo...
