Four hundred specimens were collected from pediatric patients hospitalized in Singapore; 21 of these specimens tested positive for human metapneumovirus (HMPV), with the A2 genotype predominating. A 5% infection rate was estimated, suggesting that HMPV is a significant cause of morbidity among the pediatric population of Singapore.
Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is an important cause of lower respiratory tract infections in hospitalized children, but the age-related incidence and effect of hMPV in unselected children in the community have not been evaluated. We studied a cohort of 1,338 children <13 years of age throughout 1 respiratory season in Finland during 2000-2001. We examined children and obtained a nasal swab for v...
Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is genetically related to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV); both cause respiratory tract illnesses ranging from a mild cough to bronchiolitis and pneumonia. The F protein-directed monoclonal antibody (mAb) palivizumab has been shown to prevent severe lower respiratory tract RSV infection in animals and humans. We have previously reported on a panel of mAbs against ...

The performance of a commercially manufactured direct fluorescent-antibody assay kit for human metapneumovirus was compared to that of reverse transcriptase PCR, the current "gold standard." The kit demonstrated a sensitivity of 95.2%, a specificity of 100%, and an accuracy of 98.9%.
A number of epidemiological studies have shown human metapneumovirus (hMPV) to be one of the most important viral agents associated with acute respiratory infections in humans. However, due to the difficulty in growing the virus, all epidemiological studies of hMPV infection have been performed on the basis of the molecular method. Thus, the development of a cell line suitable for the isolation...
