REPETITIVE MECHANICAL STIMULATION CAUSES DEPRESSION OF EXCITABILITY IN ISOLATED PACINIAN CORPUSCLES: the mechanical threshold of the sense organ for producing nerve impulses increases progressively with time of repetitive stimulation. The effect is completely reversible; it can be elicited with repetitive stimuli of less than threshold strength. Within certain limits, the depression increases a...

The mechanochromic compound 1 forms green-emitting crystals (1g) and blue-emitting crystals (1b) that exhibit two intriguing responses to mechanical stimulation. Upon mechanical stimulation, the emission color of 1g does not change but its crystalline structure does. Conversely, 1b shows a clear emission shift, but it retains its molecular arrangement upon grinding.

Both swallowing and coughing, protective reflexes of the airway, can be initiated from the larynx. The purpose of this study was to find the laryngeal receptors excited by the adequate stimuli for these reflexes and to define the characteristics of their discharge to the stimuli. This represents the first step in defining the significant parameters of the input for each protective reflex. The l...

Bone mass distribution and structure are dependent on mechanical stress and adaptive response at cellular and tissue levels. Mechanical stimulation of bone induces new bone formation in vivo and increases the metabolic activity and gene expression of osteoblasts in culture. A wide variety of devices have been tested for mechanical stimulation of cells and tissues in vitro. The aim of this work ...

The aim of the study is to characterize the local muscles motion in individuals undergoing whole body mechanical stimulation. In this study we aim also to evaluate how subject positioning modifies vibration dumping, altering local mechanical stimulus. Vibrations were delivered to subjects by the use of a vibrating platform, while stimulation frequency was increased linearly from 15 to 60 Hz. Tw...
