Contaminations of the population lens and transient absorption in thc obsened thermal lens signal sometimes cause a misinterpretation of the signal. Rcccntly, we ha1.c developed several methods to evaluate the relative contributions of these components in thc observed thermal lens signal. These methods with reccnt results are sumtnarizcd, and mcrits and limitations of each method are discussed.

The effect of three fungicide treatment programmes and the level spring nitrogen fertilisation on seed yield two types ofcultivars Brassica napus L. sown at different seeding rates was studied in a field experiment. subject study anopen-pollinated cultivar ‘Casoar’ restored hybrid ‘Visby’. Three plant protection programmes, levels nitrogenfertilisation (160 220 kg N⋅ha1), for each (‘Visby’—50 7...

Antigenic drift allowing escape from neutralizing antibodies is an important feature of transmission and survival of influenza viruses in host populations. Antigenic drift has been studied in particular detail for influenza A H3N2 and well defined antigenic clusters of this virus documented. We examine how host immunogenetics contributes to determination of the antibody spectrum, and hence the ...

Arthrobacter sp. strain HA1 utilizes 18 C2-to-C8 1-haloalkanes for growth and synthesizes an inducible 1-bromoalkane debrominase of unknown physiological function (R. Scholtz, T. Leisinger, F. Suter, and A.M. Cook, J. Bacteriol. 169:5016-5021, 1987) in addition to an inducible 1-chlorohexane halidohydrolase which dehalogenates some 50 substrates, including alpha, omega-dihaloalkanes. alpha, ome...

Influenza B virus Yamagata group strains, isolated in the 2000 to 2001 influenza epidemic season, reacted poorly to the polyclonal ferret sera prepared against strains isolated earlier. The results of genetic analysis clarified that a point mutation of the nucleotide at position 126 in the HA1 region and the corresponding one-amino-acid substitution altered viral antigenicity.

PURPOSE This study tested the hypothesis that antioxidant supplementation would attenuate plasma cytokine (IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha), and C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations at rest and in response to exercise at 4300-m elevation. METHODS A total of 17 recreationally trained men were matched and assigned to an antioxidant (N = 9) or placebo (N = 8) group in a double-blinded...

A Phase I trial conducted in 2009-2010 demonstrated that oral vaccination with a replication competent Ad4-H5 (A/Vietnam) vector with dosages ranging from 107-1011 viral particles was well tolerated. HA-specific T-cell responses were efficiently induced, but very limited hemagglutination-inhibiting (HI) humoral responses were measured. However, a single boost of Ad4-H5-Vtn vaccinated individual...

The highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 viruses, especially the laboratory-generated H5N1 mutants, have demonstrated the potential to cross the species barrier and infect mammals and humans. Consequently, the design of an effective and safe anti-H5N1 vaccine is essential. We previously demonstrated that the full-length hemagglutinin 1 (HA1) could induce significant neutralizing antibo...
