BACKGROUND The overall incidence of male breast cancer is around 1% of all breast cancers and is on the rise. In this review we aim to present various aspects of male breast cancer with particular emphasis on incidence, risk factors, patho-physiology, treatment, prognostic factors, and outcome. METHODS Information on all aspects of male breast cancer was gathered from available relevant liter...

While male breast cancer (MBC) consists only 1% of all breast cancers in the United States, approximately 2000 men are diagnosed annually and the incidence seems to be slowly increasing. About 50% of men have axillary nodal metastasis at the time of diagnosis. A mean delay of 6 to 10 months occurs in the diagnosis of MBC, which leads to the progression of the disease before presentation. More t...

Three cases of male breast cancer were diagnosed among a small group of men who worked in a basement office of a multi-story office building. This office was adjacent to an electrical switchgear room which generated high magnetic fields in their work space. The risk of male breast cancer in this group was increased about 100-fold (observe three cases, expect 0.03 cases; P < 0.00001). Since 1991...

Carcinoma of the male breast is a comparatively rare form of malignantdisease, representing about 0.2% of all male cancer. Among 11,543 cases of carcinoma of the breast seen at the Christie Hospital and Holt Radium Institute, Manchester, between 1945 and 1959, 110 (0.95%) were in males. Other records seem to show precisely the same proportion, suggesting a similar aetiological background for br...

Female breast cancer patients have an increased risk of developing subsequent malignant diseases, but this issue is rarely discussed in regards to male breast cancer patients. Thus, we conducted a national survey that included 100,915 female and 578 male breast cancer patients to investigate the risk of second primary malignancy (SPM). During a follow-up period that included 529,782 person-year...

We present the case of a 76 year-old male with BRCA2 and a personal history of left-sided breast cancer who presented 20 years later with right-sided breast cancer found on screening mammography. The role of screening mammography and its relevance to males with breast cancer is poorly understood. There are currently no screening guidelines for male breast cancer. Further research is needed to d...

Male breast cancer comprises less than 1% of breast cancer diagnoses. Although estrogen exposure has been causally linked to the development of female breast cancers, the etiology of male breast cancer is unclear. Here, we show via fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) that the Y chromosome was clonally lost at a frequency of ~16% (5/31) in two independent co...

Carcinoma of a breast is rare in men accounting for 0.6% of all breast cancers and less than 1% of malignancies in men. Risk factors are same as that of female breast cancer. Poor prognosis of this cancer is attributed to late age of presentation. We present a case of male breast cancer diagnosed with cytology in a 73 year old male patient to highlight its rarity and to increase the awareness.
