the present study is designed to evaluate the application of a simple method for rapid identification of malassezia furfur among other malassezia spp. based on production of a brownish-red pigment and its diffusion into the medium containing l-tryptophan as a sigle source of nitrogen.  91 strains of malassezia (20% m. furfur , 2% m. sympodialis , 5% m. obtosa and 73% m. globosa ) isolated from ...

BACKGROUND Malassezia yeasts are normal flora of the skin that are discovered in 75~98% of health subjects, but since its association with various skin disorders have been known, many studies have been conducted in the distribution of the yeasts. OBJECTIVE To isolate, identify, and classify Malassezia yeasts from the normal human skin of Koreans by using the rapid and accurate molecular biolo...

Malassezia is a genus of lipid-dependent yeasts. It is associated with common skin diseases such as pityriasis versicolor and atopic dermatitis and can cause systemic infections in immunocompromised individuals. Owing to the slow growth and lipid requirements of these fastidious yeasts, convenient and reliable antifungal drug susceptibility testing assays for Malassezia spp. are not widely avai...

Melanin-like pigment produced in vitro and in vivo by Malassezia yeasts has not been described before. Masson-Fontana staining confirmed accumulation of black pigment on the cell walls of L-dihydroxyphenylalaline (L-DOPA)-cultured Malassezia species. Black pigment was also observed in cells and hyphae from hyperpigmented patient lesions with culture-confirmed pityriasis versicolor and seborrhei...

The authors report a case of pityriasis versicolor circinata whose isolated etiologic agent was Malassezia sympodialis in a 34-year-old woman. The isolation and identification of Malassezia sympodialis were accomplished with modified Dixon's agar, and the molecular method used to confirm the species was polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis (PCR-RFLP).

Background and Objectives: Genus Malassezia comprises lipophilic yeasts which have been recognized as normal flora of the skin. Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is a common superficial infection of the stratum corneum caused by several species of Malassezia which is seen among different ages, although, this infection is more common in adolescence. The aim of this study was to determine the distribu...

The skin is our first line of defense, protecting us from invasion and evaporation. Its variable structure, changing geography, and complex immune repertoire provide a vast interface for our cutaneous microbial community. Skin is inhabited by many thousands of microbes, but this review focuses on the dominant eukaryote, Malassezia, and its host interaction. Malassezia compromises 17 species wit...

A novel formulation of RPMI 1640 medium for susceptibility testing of Malassezia yeasts by broth microdilution (BMD) and Etest is proposed. A modification of the NCCLS M27-A2 BMD method was used to test 53 isolates of Malassezia furfur (12 isolates), M. sympodialis (8 isolates), M. slooffiae (4 isolates), M. globosa (22 isolates), M. obtusa (2 isolates), M. restricta (2 isolates), M. pachyderma...

Malassezia spp in skin microbiome scalp has been implicated in seborrheic dermatitis pathogenesis. Thus, treatment based in antifungal combined to topical keratolitic agents have been indicated as well as oral isotretinoin as it reduces the sebum production, glandular's size and possesses anti-inflammatory properties. This randomized, comparative and therapeutic trial aimed toper form the genot...
