introduction weeds are main factors reducing crops yield, especially under organic farming conditions (). it has been reported that weed populations are more in organic farming compared to conventional cropping systems, resulting in more reduction of growth and yield. although the chemical control is a fast and effective way for controlling weed populations, some negative impacts of the recent ...

The nucleotide sequences of the 10 genomic segments of an Italian isolate of maize rough dwarf virus (MRDV) were determined. This first complete genomic sequence of MRDV will help understand the phylogenetic relationships among group 2 fijiviruses and especially the closely related rice black-streaked dwarf virus, which is also found to naturally infect maize.

"Single" T = 1 isometric particles of Maize streak virus (MSV) have been isolated from infected maize leaves. Biochemical and genetic characterizations show that these particles contain subgenomic (sg) MSV DNA encapsidated by the MSV coat protein. The largest sg DNA is 1.56 kb, slightly larger than half genome size, although sg DNAs as small as 0.2 kb were also cloned. The sg DNAs are not infec...

The significance of haploid plants as genetic and plant breeding tools has been recognized for a long time. Haploid production techniques including anther culture, isolated microspore culture and intergeneric hybridization between wheat × Hordeum bulbosum and wheat × maize have been used to produce homozygous lines which accelerate breeding programs. In this study, wheat × maize hybridization a...

Studies at the University of Reading (UK) compared silage quality, feed intake and digestibility of maize silage with maize±sun ̄ower (MS), maize±kale (MK) and maize±runner bean (MRB) silage, when sun ̄owers, kale and runner beans represented 26, 7 and 16% of total silage dry matter (DM). All intercrop silages had higher crude protein values (MS, 137 g kgÿ1, MRB, 120 g kgÿ1, MK, 105 g kgÿ1) than ...

Intercropping results in high overall system productivity on a given piece of land due to the efficient use available plant growth resources. Weed control intercropping systems is, however, still challenge. This study focuses effect type weed (chemical/mechanical) and timing chemical herbicide application (pre-emergence/post-emergence) crop maize bean mixture. For this purpose, three-year field...

abstract- maize production, which is ranked after wheat and barely in fars province, iran, needs a considerable amount of irrigation water that is not available in scarce water conditions in drought situations. therefore, proper planting method can improve irrigation water management. the objectives of the present study were to investigate the effects of two planting methods, on-bed and in furr...

Maize streak virus (MSV), which causes maize streak disease (MSD), is one of the most serious biotic threats to African food security. Here, we use whole MSV genomes sampled over 30 years to estimate the dates of key evolutionary events in the 500 year association of MSV and maize. The substitution rates implied by our analyses agree closely with those estimated previously in controlled MSV evo...

Global climate change can affect yields of agricultural crops are likely to be affected due to rise in CO2 and temperature, apart from other factors. In this context, the present study aimed at to assess the effects of elevated ambient CO2 concentration, maximum and minimum temperatures alone and in combinations on crop productivity of three major cropping systems (maize-wheat, rice-wheat and c...
