Imaging of the preterm infant brain has advanced dramatically beyond the earliest era of transillumination. Computed tomography (CT), a crucial innovation during the early 1970s, allowed noninvasive visualization of intracerebral lesions, particularly hemorrhage. The capability to document brain injury in the preterm infant led to better clarification of links to developmental outcomes. With th...

Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely applied for examination and diagnosis of brain tumors based on its advantages of high resolution in detecting the soft tissues and especially of its harmless radiation damages to human bodies. The goal of the processing of images is automatic segmentation of brain edema and tumors, in different dimensions of the magnetic resonance images. M...

Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents have an important role to differentiate healthy and diseased tissues. Access and design new contrast agents for the optimal use of MRI are necessary. This study aims to evaluate iron oxide–4A nanocomposite ability to act as a magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent.Materials and Methods: Iron oxide–4A nanocomposite (F4A) was syn...

Parkinson's disease (PD) affects at least 10 million people worldwide. It is a neurodegenerative disease, which is currently diagnosed by neurological examination. No neuroimaging investigation or blood biomarker is available to aid diagnosis and prognosis. Most effort toward diagnosis using magnetic resonance (MR) has been focused on the use of structural/anatomical neuroimaging and diffusion ...

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that affects motor neurons in the cerebral cortex, brainstem, and spinal cord, brain regions in which conventional magnetic resonance imaging is often uninformative. Although the mean time from symptom onset to diagnosis is estimated to be about one year, the current criteria only prescribe magnetic resonance imaging to ex...

Neuroimaging constitutes an important component in the diagnosis of the underlying infectious agents in central nervous system (CNS) infections. Despite the recent advances in neuroimaging evaluation, the diagnosis of unclear infectious CNS diseases remains a challenge. Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used in routine practice to identify abnormal areas involved in CNS infection...

We studied developmental plasticity using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in a preterm infant with brain injury on structural MRI. fMRI showed preserved brain function and subsequent neurodevelopment was within the normal range. Multimodal neuroimaging including fMRI can improve understanding of neural plasticity after preterm birth and brain injury.

A hospital stay of 30 days was required in a 47-year-old woman with alcohol withdrawal. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings revealed a focal brain stem lesion and multiple focal supracortical abnormalities. Could asymptomatic neuroimaging abnormalities predict risk of complicated alcohol withdrawal? Future clinical observations and longitudinal studies may wish to address this potential r...

Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the most rapidly evolving techniques in the MRI field. This method exploits the random diffusional motion of water molecules, which has intriguing properties depending on the physiological and anatomical environment of the organisms studied. We explain the principles of this emerging technique and subsequently introduce some of its present ap...

Neuroimaging is becoming an increasingly important means of detecting changes in biochemical, microstructural and functional patterns occurring during rehabilitation. In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), “advanced techniques”, such as functional MRI, relaxometry, diffusion tensor imaging and spectroscopy, are making it possible to investigate these changes in vivo, together with brain function....
