To report a case complicated with a retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) tear after intravitreal aflibercept injection. A 78-year-old man had deteriorated visual acuity in his left eye. Fluorescein angiography showed occult choroidal neovascularization. Optical coherence tomography showed a serous retinal detachment and fibrovascular pigment epithelial detachment. He was diagnosed as typical age-re...

Reduced absorption capacity in patients with intestinal resections (IR) could result in malabsorption of fat-soluble components like carotenoids, which are of clinical interest in relation to visual health. In this case cohort, we investigated the association between IR and serum lutein, zeaxanthin, β-carotene and macular pigment optical density, when compared with healthy controls. Ten patient...

One of the most significant manifestations of diabetes is retinal damage in the form of diabetic macular edema (DME), leading to inevitable loss of vision and disability of patients of the working age [1]. Early diagnostics allows identifying the disease at an early stage of development and reducing the risk of irreversible loss of vision. Currently, one of the main ways of retinal lesions visu...

A 20-year-old healthy man suffered rapid loss of bilateral central vision with placoid lesions at the level of the retinal pigment epithelium and choriocapillaris scattered in the posterior pole of the fundus. In addition, acute vasculitis of the retinal veins was remarkable and widespread throughout the posterior pole and midperiphery. These inflammatory signs subsided in several weeks and wer...

Macular edema has been observed frequently in man after cataract extraction, but pathogenic mechanisms remain unclear. Seven eyes of four young adult rhesus monkeys underwent lens extraction. The retinas and maculae of these eyes were examined by ophthalmoscopy fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, light and electron microscopy, and the horseradish peroxidase tracer technique. In the mac...

A patient had bilateral macular coloboma with aggregations of pigment clumps located perivascularly, predominantly paravenously, and in other parts of the retina. The Toxoplasma IgG antibody was negative. The diagnosis of bilateral macular coloboma with pigmented paravenous retinochoroidal atrophy was made and seemed to be a developmental abnormality in origin.

The fundi of three patients with aniridia were photographed with a 470 nm illuminating light source. No apparent change in contrast was observable throughout the macular region. This would suggest an absence of the macular pigment. The likelihood of aniridics being more susceptible than normal persons to blue light damage is discussed.

This study is designed to investigate the relationship between macular pigment optical density (MPOD) and ocular biometric parameters. The following details were recorded for 180 healthy subjects: demographic profile; best-corrected visual acuity; refractive status; ocular biometric parameters [axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT) and vitreous chamber depth (VCD)...

Purpose We present the first case in the literature of a patient with Kartagener syndrome and ocular findings of nonexudative age-related macular degeneration. Observations A 55-year-old woman with Kartagener syndrome and chronic angle closure glaucoma presented for evaluation of the retina. Optos ultra-widefield imaging of the fundus showed glaucomatous cupping, drusen, and retinal pigment e...

PURPOSE Antioxidant supplements may reduce age-related macular degeneration (AMD) progression. The macular carotenoids are of particular interest because of their biochemical, optical, and anatomic properties. This classic twin study was designed to determine the heritability of macular pigment (MP) augmentation in response to supplemental lutein (L) and zeaxanthin (Z). METHODS A total of 322...
