Piezoelectric elements are widely used for damping micro-vibrations in mechanical structures. Active damping can be realised robustly by means of collocated actuator-sensor-pairs, controlled so as to extract vibration energy. Excellent damping performance is possible as long as sufficient controllability is assured. Passive damping based on a single piezoelectric element can be realised by the ...

This paper provides a comprehensive derivation for thermoelastic damping (TED) in flexural-mode ring gyroscopes, in light of recent efforts to design high rateresolution gyroscopes. Imposing an upper limit on the attainable mechanical noise floor of a vibratory gyroscope, thermoelastic damping in a ring gyroscope is extracted from the equations of linear thermoelasticity. By assuming that it is...

The influence of outside quantum noises on the amplification of weak measurements is investigated. Three typical quantum noises are discussed. The maximum values of the pointer’s shifts decrease sharply with the strength of the depolarizing channel and phase damping. In order to obtain significant amplified signals, the preselection quantum systems must be kept away from the two quantum noises....

Weighted labelled transition systems are LTSs whose transitions are given weights drawn from a commutative monoid, subsuming a wide range of systems with quantitative aspects. In this paper we extend this theory towards other behavioural equivalences, by considering semirings of weights. Taking advantage of this extra structure, we consider a general notion of weak weighted bisimulation, which ...

Using a program of perturbative resummation I compute the damping rates for fields at nonzero spatial momentum to leading order in weak coupling in hot QCD. Sum rules for spectral densities are used to simplify the calculations. For massless fields the damping rate has an apparent logarithmic divergence in the infrared limit, which is cut off by the screening of static magnetic fields (“magneti...

The asymptotic stability of boundary controlled port-Hamiltonian systems defined on a 1D spatial domain interconnected to a class of non-linear boundary damping is addressed. It is shown that if the port-Hamiltonian system is approximately observable, then any boundary damping which behaves linear for small velocities asymptotically stabilizes the system.

The positioning accuracy of conventional servo hydraulic cylinders is limited by oil compressibility, leak oil, nonlinearities, hysteresis effects, etc. This affects the control quality of the actuator, which is essential for a use in high dynamic positioning tasks, such as applications in active damping systems for machine tools. The presented hydraulic actuator design is a new approach to ext...

We propose Dirichlet Process mixtures of Generalized Linear Models (DP-GLM), a new class of methods for nonparametric regression. Given a data set of input-response pairs, the DP-GLM produces a global model of the joint distribution through a mixture of local generalized linear models. DP-GLMs allow both continuous and categorical inputs, and can model the same class of responses that can be mo...
