Oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) containing unmethylated CpG dinucleotides in contexts of unique sequence (CpG motifs) is active as adjuvant in induction of cellular and humoral immune responses in young mice. To date, there are only limited reports about effect of CpG ODN on immune responses against hepatitis B (HB) infection in aged mice. Our studies demonstrated there were significant increases i...

BACKGROUND Different studies have demonstrated that a small proportion of healthy individuals receiving the hepatitis B (HB) vaccine do not produce protective levels of anti-HB antibody, a phenomenon which could be linked to certain human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class-II alleles or haplotypes. OBJECTIVES The present study was undertaken to determine the frequency of HLA class-II alleles in Ir...

Three cases of pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis occurred in which unusual, fastidious, Gram negative coccobacilli belonging to the "HB" group were isolated. The organisms were Haemophilus aphrophilus in case 1, intermediate between H aphrophilus and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans in case 2, and Eikenella corrodens in case 3. All HB bacteria are sensitive to a wide range of antibiotics.

The expression of fetal hemoglobin, Hb F, in the adult cells is cellularly restricted both in vivo and in culture. Because, in cultures of erythroid progenitors, subclones that express or fail to express Hb F are derived from the same erythroid stem cell, a mechanism must exist whereby Hb F expression segregates in the progeny of erythroid progenitors during their differentiation. We present ma...

The significance of a delayed type hypersensitivity skin reaction to hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) (HBs-DTH) in type B viral hepatitis (VHB) and in intradermal hepatitis B (HB) vaccination is reviewed. HBs-DTH could be developed by the intradermal injection of HB vaccine in anti-HBs positive people and also in persons immunized with HB vaccine. Thus, HBs-DTH could serve as a useful marker...

AIMS Nitrite (NO₂⁻), now regarded as an endocrine reserve of nitric oxide (NO), is bioactivated by nitrite reductase enzymes to mediate physiological responses. In blood, haemoglobin (Hb) catalyses nitrite reduction through a reaction modulated by haem redox potential and oxygen saturation, resulting in maximal NO production around the Hb P₅₀. Although physiological studies demonstrate that Hb-...

Of the 110 dentists who had presented seroconversion 50 days after the intradermal application of three 2 micrograms doses of the Belgian recombinant vaccine against hepatitis B (HB), administered eight years before at an interval of one month between the 1st and 2nd doses and of five months between the 2nd and 3rd doses, 51 were included for the assessment of the persistence of immunity. None ...

BACKGROUND/AIM Neuroblastoma (NB) is the most common and lethal extracranial solid tumor in children. The present study aimed to verify that the heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF) is a rational target in NB therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS We examined expression of EGFR ligands in four NB cell lines using 2-dimensional culture (DC) and 3DC conditions. To assess t...

13-hexyl-berberine hydrochloride (HB-13) is a derivative from berberine which finds widespread applications in the treatment of infectious pathogens including fungi, bacteria, parasites and viruses. As our continuing efforts for treatment of herpes simplex virus (HSV), we studied the topical delivery and safety of HB-13 in a gel formulation (0.5%) in a pig model. Our studies demonstrated the ma...

A water soluble polysaccharide, HB-1, with a molecular weight of 23,930, was isolated from radix Ranunculi ternati. by hot water extraction, ethanol precipitation, deproteination, ultrafiltration and gel-filtration column chromatography. Its sugar composition was determined by GLC as Glc, Ara, and Gal in a molar ration of 16.071: 2.722: 1. And the absolute configuration of Glc was identified as ...
