OBJECTIVE It is unknown why most amoebic liver abscess (ALA) cases occur in alcohol drinkers. In experimental studies, the presence of 'iron' potentiates the in-vitro growth of Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica), and is also known to increase its in-vivo invasiveness in animal infections. Chronic alcoholism increases the hepatic iron deposition. We hypothesized that ALA occurs more commonly...
OBJECTIVES Excessive iron can accumulate in the kidney and induce tissue damage. Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza) injection is a traditional Chinese medicinal preparation used for preventing and treating chronic renal failure. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of treatment with Danshen injection on iron overload-induced kidney damage. METHODS Mice were mock-treated with sa...
The origin of previously observed variations in stoichiometry of iron oxidation during the oxidative deposition of iron in ferritin has been poorly understood. Knowledge of the stoichiometry of Fe(II) oxidation by O2 is essential to establishing the mechanism of iron core formation. In the present work, the amount of Fe(II) oxidized was measured by Mössbauer spectrometry and the O2 consumed by ...
Young children and infants normally have essentially no detectable brain iron. We evaluated brain iron patterns on 23 MR scans in 20 patients under 6 years of age with clinical and MR-documented cerebral infarctions in an attempt to further understand the neuropathologic phenomenon of increased iron deposition, which has been observed in other disease states. MR was performed at 1.5 T with spin...
Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is used to assemble metal-organic framework (MOF) materials in nano- and micro-particulate, thin-film form. The flexibility of the method is demonstrated by the successful deposition of 4 types of MOFs: NU-1000, UiO-66, HKUST-1, and Al-MIL-53. Additionally, EPD is used to pattern the growth of NU-1000 thin films that exhibit full electrochemical activity.
The aim of this study was to investigate the importance of surface potential in microbial deposition onto modified granular surfaces. Recent experimental and theoretical work has indicated that surfaces coated with metal oxides and hydroxide rich oxide/hydroxide mixtures ((hydr)oxides) have the potential to increase the capture efficiencies of commercial filtration systems. This study quantitat...
OBJECTIVE Hemochromatosis is an autosomal recessive disease that is one of the most important reasons for iron overload. Sickle cell disease is a hemoglobinopathy that occurs as a result of a homozygous mutation in the hemoglobin gene. Erythrocyte transfusion is frequently used in the treatment of this disease. Iron overload as a result of transfusion is important in the mortality and morbidity...
We attempted to clarify the storage iron metabolism from the change in the serum ferritin level. We assumed that the nonlinear decrease in serum ferritin was caused by serum ferritin increase in iron mobilization. Under this assumption, we determined both ferritin and hemosiderin iron levels by computer-assisted simulation of the row of decreasing assay-dots of serum ferritin in 11 patients wit...
BACKGROUND Beta-thalassemia major (β-TM) patients need blood transfusions, which result in iron deposition. To regulate chelation therapy, iron load has to be measured. With MRI, the amount of signal loss and T2* decay time shortening are used for iron quantification. OBJECTIVES The aim was to measure adrenal iron load with T2* relaxometry using MRI, and to compare it with liver and cardiac i...
Ferroportin disease (hemochromatosis type 4) is a recently recognized disorder of human iron metabolism, characterized by iron deposition in macrophages, including Kupffer cells. Mutations in the gene encoding ferroportin 1, a cellular iron exporter, are responsible for this iron storage disease, inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. We present clinical, histopathological, and radiological ...
