Ipratropium bromide (Atrovent) is a commonly and widely used antimuscarinic bronchodilator with very few side-effects. Although buccal ulceration and haemorrhagic bullae affecting the palate have been reported with ipratropium bromide (IB) they do not appear in the British National Formulary and are not mentioned in the manufacturer’s (Atrovent) product information either. Therefore, we believe...

The effect of inhaled prostaglandin (PG) F2 alpha on the response to the inhaled tussive agent capsaicin was investigated in normal subjects. Seven subjects inhaled three breaths of four doses of capsaicin (0.3, 0.6, 1.2, and 2.4 nmol) before and immediately after inhaling PGF2 alpha (0.1 mumol) or placebo (0.15M NaCl) on separate days. The numbers of capsaicin induced coughs were greater after...

The effects of anticholinergic agents or long acting beta(2)-agonists on exercise capacity in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) improves various out come measures but there is not enough double-blind study which included comparison of different medications. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of ipratropium bromide and formoterol on exercise capacity and also to determine...

BACKGROUND Studies have suggested an increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality associated with the use of ipratropium bromide. We sought to examine the association between ipratropium bromide use and the risk of cardiovascular events (CVEs). METHODS We performed a cohort study of 82,717 US veterans with a new diagnosis of COPD between 1999 and 2002. Subjects were followed until...

Computerised breath sounds analysis was used to assess the response of infants with wheeze and ruttles to the drug ipratropium bromide. A mean decrease in breath sounds intensity occurred in infants with ruttles after five minutes (20.5 dB), but not until 20 minutes in those with wheeze (8.1 dB). This differential response may be related to different underlying pathophysiology.

The contribution of vagal mechanisms to exercise-induced asthma has been studied in 10 adult asthmatic patients using the anticholinergic drug ipratropium bromide. Exercise tests were performed for eight minutes on a cycle ergometer and each individual's tests were standardised by matching oxygen uptake. Two tests were done on each of three study days, the first being without previous medicatio...

Thirty one children with asthma were given 40 micrograms of ipratropium bromide and identical placebo by inhalation three times a day in a double blind, randomised crossover study to test the ability of an anticholinergic drug to modify the diurnal variation in airway calibre and bronchial reactivity. Subjects measured peak expiratory flow rate approximately eight hourly, before and after inhal...

We evaluated bronchial responsiveness to inhaled albuterol (salbutamol), ipratropium bromide, methacholine, and propranolol in eight heart-lung transplant (HLT) recipients 2.3 +/- 1.5 months (mean +/- SD) (range, 1 to 4.5 months) after HLT. All patients had a restrictive ventilatory defect but none had airflow limitation (FEV1/FVC = 0.93 +/- 0.05) (range, 0.86 to 0.97). Specific airway conducta...

Bronchodilators (such as ipratropium bromide), steroids (such as fluticasone propionate), and newly developed anti-inflammatory drugs (such as roflumilast) are used for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We recently reported that lecithinized superoxide dismutase (PC-SOD) confers a protective effect in mouse models of COPD. We here examined the therapeutic effect of the...

STUDY OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effects of nebulized ipratropium bromide on intraocular pressures and pupillary responses in children with asthma. DESIGN A double-blind, randomized, crossover study. SETTING Children's Hospital of Winnipeg, University of Manitoba. PATIENTS OR PARTICIPANTS Age 6 to 17 years with asthma. INTERVENTION Nebulized ipratropium bromide added to albuterol sulfate...
