We show that the generating function of the symmetric group with respect to five particular statistics gives rise to an exponential Riordan array, whose inverse is the coefficient array of the associated orthogonal polynomials. This also provides us with an LDU factorization of the Hankel matrix of the associated moments.

A polymer placed in chaotic flow with large mean shear tumbles, making a-periodic flips. We describe the statistics of angular orientation, as well as of tumbling time (separating two subsequent flips) of polymers in this flow. The probability distribution function (PDF) of the polymer orientation is peaked around a shear-preferred direction. The tails of this angular PDF are algebraic. The PDF...

Named entity translation is indispensable in cross language information retrieval nowadays. We propose an approach of combining lexical information, web statistics, and inverse search based on Google to backward translate a Chinese named entity (NE) into English. Our system achieves a high Top-1 accuracy of 87.6%, which is a relatively good performance reported in this area until present.

We propose two test statistics for use in inverse regression problems Y = Kθ + , where K is a given linear operator which cannot be continuously inverted. Thus, only noisy, indirect observations Y for the function θ are available. Both test statistics have a counterpart in classical hypothesis testing, where they are called the order selection test and the data-driven Neyman smooth test. We als...

The Radon transform belongs to the area of Inverse Problems. The reconstruction of a function from its projection or averages is a central point of study. Besides having direct applications in medical tomography, geophysics, there are also applications in signal processing, statistics and probability. Hence, it is useful to consider discretized versions of the Radon transform.

We apply a simple method to provide explicit expressions for different scaling exponents in intermittent fully developed turbulence, that before were only given through a Legendre transform. This includes predictability exponents for infinitesimal and non infinitesimal perturbations, Lagrangian velocity exponents, and dispersion exponents. We obtain also new results concerning inverse statistic...

A new approach for point process diagnostics is presented. The method is based on extending second-order statistics for point processes by weighting each point by the inverse of the conditional intensity function at the point’s location. The result is generalized versions of the spectral density, R/S statistic, correlation integral and K-function, which can be used to test the fit of a complex ...

We investigate Lagrangian relative dispersion in direct numerical simulation of two-dimensional inverse cascade turbulence. The analysis is performed by using both standard fixed time statistics and an exit time approach. The latter allows a more precise determination of the Richardson constant which is found to be g.4 with a possible weak finite-size dependence. Our results show only small dev...

In this paper, we establish a natural bijection between the almost-increasing cyclic permutations of length n and unimodal permutations of length n − 1. This map is used to give a new characterization, in terms of pattern avoidance, of almostincreasing cycles. Additionally, we use this bijection to enumerate several statistics on almost-increasing cycles. Such statistics include descents, inver...

We introduce a superstatistical model for the progression statistics of malignant cancer cells. The metastatic cascade is modeled as a complex nonequilibrium system with several macroscopic pathways and inverse-chi-square distributed parameters of the underlying Poisson processes. The predictions of the model are in excellent agreement with observed survival time probability distributions of br...
