As applications grow increasingly communication-oriented, interrupt performance quickly becomes a crucial component of high performance I/O system design. At the same time, accurately measuring interrupt handler performance is difficult with the traditional simulation, instrumentation, or statistical sampling approaches. One of the most important components of interrupt performance is cache beh...

As a result of technology trends towards multi-gigahertz processors, the I/O system is becoming a critical bottleneck for many applications. Interrupts are a major aspect of most device drivers. Characterizing interrupt performance and its relation to architectural trends is important for understanding and improving I/O subsystem performance. Kernel instrumentation in combination with performan...

This WiP describes some preliminary results obtained when experimenting with the priorities of IRQ threads in a real-time version of the Linux kernel. IRQ threads allow to schedule interrupt handlers so that their interference on real-time activities can be controlled. However, the experiments presented in this paper indicate that fixed priority scheduling does not provide enough flexibility fo...

This paper describes an on-going work focused on using Adaptive Reservations to cope with unpredictabilities due to the interrupt processing times in real-time kernels. Using this approach, the execution time stolen by interrupt processing is modeled as a variation in the application execution times, and an adaptive scheduling mechanism automatically compensates its effects.

TCP performs poorly in networks with serious packet reordering. Processing reordered packets in the TCP-layer is costly and inefficient, involving interaction of the sender and receiver. Motivated by the interrupt coalescing mechanism that delivers packets upward for protocol processing in blocks, we propose a new strategy, Sorting Reordered Packets with Interrupt Coalescing (SRPIC), to reduce ...

This report describes an experiment designed to test the use of simple linear motion as an attention-getting device for computer displays. The experiment involved two tasks: a primary task that required the typed transcription of a document onto a computer screen, and a secondary task that involved detecting and responding to a moving icon signal. The icon consisted of a rectangular bar that gr...

We present a model for error recovery and interrupt handling by a reasoning, acting, and linguistically-competent cognitive agent. Faced with an emergency situation, the agent reasons about what it needs to do and what it is currently doing to decide what to do next. Its reasoning is based on general context-sensitive domain knowledge about the priority of acts. Such knowledge may be provided t...

Life-critical warning message, abbreviated as is a special event-driven message that carries emergency information in Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X). Three important characteristics distinguish messages from ordinary vehicular are sporadicity, crowding, and ultra-time-criticality. Specifically, come only once while sporadic manner; however, when they come, tend to crowd need be delivered short ord...
