We calculate single top–quark production at hadron colliders via the chromo–magnetic flavor–changing neutral current couplings t̄cg and t̄ug. We find that the strength for the anomalous t̄cg (t̄ug) coupling may be probed to κc/Λ = 0.092 TeV −1 (κu/Λ = 0.026 TeV ) at the Tevatron with 2 fb of data and κc/Λ = 0.013 TeV −1 (κu/Λ = 0.0061 TeV) at the LHC with 10 fb of data. The two couplings may be dis...

Hypercholesterolemia characterized by elevation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is a major risk factor for atherosclerotic vascular disease. p66shc mediates hypercholesterolemia-induced endothelial dysfunction and atheromatous plaque formation. We asked if LDL upregulates endothelial p66shc via changes in the epigenome and examined the role of p66shc in LDL-stimulated endothelial c...

OBJECTIVE To find out host gene expression profiles after malarial infection. METHODS Further time-course microarray analysis of peripheral blood mononuclear cells focusing on malaria pathogenesis was performed. RESULTS Up-regulation of coagulation-related genes, heat shock proteins, glycolytic enzymes, glucose transporters, and vacuolar H(+)-ATPases was found in acute febrile malaria. In e...

Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) strains are causative agents of diarrhea and hemorrhagic colitis, both diseases associated with intestinal inflammation and cell damage. Several studies have correlated EHEC virulence factors to high levels of intestinal pro-inflammatory cytokines and we have previously described that the Long polar fimbriae (Lpf) is involved in the secretion of interle...

Aim. We investigated the effects of adiponectin deficiency on circulating angiogenic cell (CAC) mobilization, homing, and neovascularization in the setting of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods & Results. AMI was induced in wild-type (WT) (n = 10) and adiponectin knockout (Adipoq (-/-)) mice (n = 7). One week after AMI, bone marrow (BM) concentration and mobilization of Sca-1(+) and Lin...

OBJECTIVES Fluvoxamine is a well-known selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI); Despite its anti-inflammatory effect, little is known about the precise mechanisms involved. In our previous work, we found that IP administration of fluvoxamine produced a noticeable anti-inflammatory effect in carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of fluvoxamin...

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) remains the most common single infective cause of death following allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-identical siblings, whereas Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-related disease is infrequent. We show here that MHC-unrestricted cytotoxic effector cells in the peripheral blood of BMT recipients are highly effective at killing EB...

The tumor microenvironment is generally hypoxic because of the limited oxygen supply from inefficient or insufficient vasculature. Hypoxic tumor tissues are also poorly supplied with serum components. We have previously demonstrated that expression of the FVII gene is induced in response to hypoxia in ovarian clear cell carcinoma (CCC) cells. This gene activation is synergistically enhanced whe...

We conducted a large-scale association study to identify genes that influence nonfamilial breast cancer risk using a collection of German cases and matched controls and >25,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms located within 16,000 genes. One of the candidate loci identified was located on chromosome 19p13.2 [odds ratio (OR) = 1.5, P = 0.001]. The effect was substantially stronger in the subset ...
