Exposure to high levels of endogenous or exogenous glucocorticoids suppresses the inflammatory response genes. Excessive endogenous hypercortisolism may mask the active inflammatory diseases. Rebound immune modulation may occur after Cushing's syndrome (CS) remission, leading to the new onset of autoimmune diseases. Here, we report a 27-year-old female patient who was recently diagnosed with sa...
BACKGROUND Thrombosis has been associated to some diseases like hyperadrenocorticism (HAC). Several drugs can alter the balance, such as the corticosteroid prednisone, used mainly for its anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects. It is known that hypercortisolism can stimulate thrombi formation by increasing coagulation factors and decreasing fibrinolysis. However it is not known how pre...
Epilepsy can induce hypercortisolism secondary to altered temporolimbic modulation of the hypothalamopituitary secretion of ACTH. 2 Hypercortisolism can produce a reversible myopathy. Epilepsy, however, has not been recognised to cause a symptomatic Cushing’s syndrome. The development of proximal myopathy as part of an epilepsy based Cushing’s syndrome, in particular, has not been reported. We ...
Adrenal histoplasmosis in Cushing's syndrome of adrenal origin is rare. A patient with Cushing's disease with bilateral nodular hyperplasia and histoplasmosis of both the adrenal glands is described. The diagnosis of histoplasmosis was only made post operatively as the constitutional manifestations, besides being partially masked by hypercortisolism also resemble those of tuberculosis.
Adrenal function test results in a girl with Cushing's syndrome and a bronchial carcinoid tumour suggested pituitary dependent hypercortisolism. Resolution after excision of the tumour indicated that her condition had been caused by ectopic adrenocorticotrophic hormone secretion. Conventional tests of adrenal function may be misleading in cases of adrenocorticotrophic hormone secreting bronchia...
There are several recent advances in the diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome, or spontaneous hypercortisolism, in dogs. Diagnostic procedures are being reshaped by the recognition of new causes of the disease and advances in imaging procedures. This article reviews the clinical manifestations, diagnostic procedures, and the forms and causes of the syndrome.
