In most children and adults, primary infection with herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) is asymptomatic. However, very rarely (incidence of 1 in 1,000,000), it can cause herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE). HSE also occurs in infants but with a much starker incidence of one in three. This age difference in susceptibility to HSV-1-caused HSE is not well understood. In a recent article in mBio, authors ...

background: herpes simplex virus (hsv) type 1 and 2 are common infectious agents worldwide. data on prevalence of hsv-1 and hsv-2 infection are limited in asia, especially in iran. the aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of hsv type 1 and 2 based on age, gender, marital status, education, living area, job, symptoms and history of disease variables. methods: the study populatio...

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii, Rubella virus, Cytomegalovirus, and herpes simplex virus (TORCH) infection is still a significant burden in developing countries since they potentially increase perinatal death decrease life quality by causing congenital disorders. As part of TORCH as one the most common infections humans, HSV Type 1 also should receive attention. HSV-1 induces an immediate reacti...

We have investigated whether herpes simplex virus (HSV) contains structural polypeptides which are modified by myristic acid. We demonstrate that herpes simplex virions contain a family of myristylated proteins, Mr approximately 13,000 to 16,000. These were mapped, using HSV-1/HSV-2 intertypic recombinants, to 0.130 to 0.204 map units on the virus genome. Using anti-peptide sera, raised against...

abstract background and aims: the burden of hiv infection and disease continues to be a major global public health concern all over the world. this study was conducted to measure igg antibody against ebv viral capsid antigen (ebv-vca igg), herpes simplex type1, and 2 to determine the seroprevalence of this infection in hiv-positive population. materials and methods: a cross-sectional study betw...

A combinatorial library was used to select a human monoclonal antibody fragment (Fab) with high affinity for G glycoprotein in herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Tests with 112 clinical specimens demonstrated successful discrimination between HSV-2 and HSV-1, showing the potential of Fab as a low-cost tool for HSV subtyping in clinical diagnosis.

Selective inhibition of herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 replication but not of HSV type 2 replication by (E)-5-(2-bromovinyl)2'-deoxyuridine (BVDU) was utilized to differentiate clinical isolates of these viruses. BVDU (0.7 microgram/ml) reduced HSV type 1 PFU by an average of 2.74 log10, but had no effect on the plaque-forming ability of HSV type 2 isolates. The incorporation of BVDU into th...

Background: It was shown that olive leave extract has antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral activities. The effects of OLE on herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) have not been systematically investigated yet. The aim of this study was to examine the in vitro effect of olive leaf hydroalcoholic extract (OLHE) on HSV-1. Methods: Virucidal effect and viral replication in Vero cell line were studied i...

Acyclovir-resistant clinical isolates of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) were analyzed in vitro for their susceptibilities to essential oils of ginger, thyme, hyssop, and sandalwood. All essential oils exhibited high levels of virucidal activity against acyclovir-sensitive strain KOS and acyclovir-resistant HSV-1 clinical isolates and reduced plaque formation significantly.

Although herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) does not induce apoptosis in infected HEp-2 cells, in the presence of cycloheximide infection induced apoptosis with characteristic morphological changes as well as endonucleosomal DNA cleavage. The induction of apoptosis without de novo protein synthesis suggests that a structural protein of the HSV-1 virion is responsible for the observed apoptosis.
