Non-toxic goitre is endemic in Greece (Malamos Koutras, Kostamis, Kralios, Rigopoulos, and Zerefos, I966a), and detailed biochemical studies have implicated iodine deficiency as the main causative factor (Malamos, Miras, Koutras, Kostamis, Binopoulos, Mantzos, Levis, Rigopoulos, Zerefos, and Tassopoulos, I966b). However, in the endemic regions studied, both goitrous and non-goitrous persons are...
In 2000, India revoked the ban on production and sale of non-iodised salt. We conducted a study in the north 24 Parganas district in the state of West Bengal to assess the prevalence of goitre, status of urinary iodine excretion (UIE) level and to estimate iodine content of salts at the household level. We surveyed 363 school children aged eight to ten years selected using a multistage cluster ...
Dean, colleagues, I am very honoured by your invitation to give the Duncan lecture for 1997. In speaking of Dr Duncan’s legacy in a remote New Guinea valley, I would like to focus on the contribution made by research in cerebral palsy that has been carried out in Papua New Guinea and in Liverpool, dividing Duncan’s legacy into three time periods: Past—up to 1979; Present—1979 to 1997 and Future...
While hypothyroidism is considered to predispose to obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), the presence of a goitre itself is not a recognized cause of OSA. We present the cases of two euthyroid patients with large goitres and clinical evidence of OSA, whose OSA symptoms significantly improved following partial thyroidectomy. This finding suggests that the goitre contributed to their symptoms.
Heterotopic thyroid tissue is described to usually lie at the tongue base, while the 10% at the hyoid bone. We report a case of incidental diagnosis of a true mediastinal goitre with preoperative chest X-ray in a 35-year old woman with a multinodular cervical goitre.
Despite long-standing supplementation of iodine in Iran, the prevalence of goitre among general people remains high in some regions. The study investigated the role of iron status in the aetiology of goitre in school children in Isfahan, Iran. Two thousand three hundred and thirty-one school children were selected by multi-stage random sampling. Thyroid size was estimated by inspection and palp...
UNLABELLED Goitre in the West African sub-region is caused by iodine deficiency and goitrogens in the diet. Supplementary iodine nutrition on a mass scale was started in Ghana in 1996. In areas where iodine deficiency have been corrected the histological pattern of goitre changes and this influences surgical decision making. Data on the histological types of goitre in our institution is lacking...
Objective: To assess the iodine nutritional status and the prevalence of goitre during pregnancy in a region of Hungary that appeared to be iodine suf®cient in previous studies. Design: A cross-sectional voluntary screening study was organized in which 313 pregnant women participated. Methods: Urine iodine concentration and the volume of the thyroid gland were measured in every woman. In the pr...
