We provide a local geometric description of how charged matter arises in type IIA, M-theory, or F-theory compactiications on Calabi-Yau manifolds. The basic idea is to deform a higher singularity into a lower one through Cartan deformations which vary over space. The results agree with expectations based on string dualities.
Using a strongly covariant formalism given by Carter for the deformations dynamics of p-branes in a curved background and a covariant and gauge invariant geometric structure constructed on the corresponding Witten’s phase space, we identify the canonical variables for Dirac-Nambu-Goto [DNG] and Gauss-Bonnet [GB] system in string theory. Future extensions of the present results are outlined.
We prove a congruence criterion for the algebraic theory of power operations in Morava E-theory, analogous to Wilkerson’s congruence criterion for torsion free λ-rings. In addition, we provide a geometric description of this congruence criterion, in terms of sheaves on the moduli problem of deformations of formal groups and Frobenius isogenies.
In this report we present the results of the Stability on Watertight Models Track. The aim of this track is to evaluate the stability of algorithms with respect to input perturbations that modify the representation of the object without changing its overall shape significantly. Examples of these perturbations include geometric noise, varying sampling patterns, small shape deformations and topol...
Elastic strain, electrical bias, and localized geometric deformations were applied to elliptical whispering-gallery-mode resonators fabricated with lithium niobate. The resultant perturbation of the mode spectrum is highly dependant on the modal indices, resulting in a discretely reconfigurable optical spectrum. Breaking of the spatial degeneracy of the whispering-gallery modes due to perturbat...
We study the isospectral deformations of the Eguchi-Hanson spaces along a torus isometric action in the noncompact noncommutative geometry. We concentrate on locality, smoothness and summability conditions of the nonunital spectral triples, and relate them to the geometric conditions to be noncommutative spin manifolds.
We present a geometric framework to model the optical effects of deformations planar holographic elements (HOE) into curved surfaces, such as sphere segments. In particular, we consider which do not preserve Gaussian curvature.
1. Background/Problem In real-time surgery simulation and planning, the Finite Element Method (FEM) is often used to simulate small and large deformation of human tissue for applications such as laparoscopy training [4], needle insertion planning [1], and image registration [2]. In using FEM, assumptions must be made about material properties and the scale of deformation of human tissues in and...
This work presents a real-time active vision tracking system based on log-polar image motion estimation with 2D geometric deformation models. We present a very efficient parametric motion estimation method, where most computation can be done offline. We propose a redundant parameterization for the geometric deformations, which improve the convergence range of the algorithm. A foveated image rep...
We present a dynamic simulation framework for topologychanging deformable objects. The objects are represented using tetrahedral meshes and deformations are governed by a corotational finite element approach for linear elasticity and plasticity. Geometric constraints are employed to efficiently handle topology changes in a unified way. Topology changes comprise fracturing and merging of deforma...
