Unlike animals which are carriers of foot and mouth disease (FMD), sub-clinically infected animals may be highly contagious. The implications of sub-clinical infections for the control of FMD are serious because such animals are likely to disseminate the disease when in contact with susceptible livestock. Recent dissemination of FMD virus (FMDV) in Europe shows that sub-clinically infected anim...

A survey of type O foot and mouth disease (FMD) virus isolates from northern Thailand was undertaken to determine the relationship between field viruses and the vaccine in use, and to gauge the range of antigenic variation among field viruses. Isolates were collected from the two most recent epizootics, 1986-1987 and 1989-1990, and assessed using a two-dimensional neutralisation test to determi...

Introduction Vaccine manufacturers evaluate the efficiency of their vaccine according to the method which is defined in the European Pharmacopoeia. Regarding foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine there are some difficulties to find animals for potency tests in the countries like Turkey where FMD is endemic and vaccine campaigns are carried out. In addition, potency tests must be carried out in c...

This study compared reproductive performance of Bos indicus cows vaccinated against the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus before timed AI or during early pregnancy (Exp. 1), as well as rectal temperature (RT) and plasma concentrations of the acute-phase protein haptoglobin in cattle vaccinated or not against the FMD virus (Exp. 2). Cattle utilized in Exp. 1 and 2 originated from herds with no ...

Proposed changes to the International Animal Health Code chapter on foot and mouth disease (FMD) reflect both the introduction of new diagnostic tests to identify animals carrying live FMD virus, and pressure to make more acceptable the use of vaccination to help control outbreaks. It is important that those using the Code fully understand the implications of these changes. One of the proposed ...

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious animal that causes devastating economic losses. The trade of live animals and derived products only possible if the exporting country free from disease, according to World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) code FMD. One most important ways prove disease-free measure levels non-structural protein antibodies (NPS) FMD virus in target populat...

We have designed a peptide-based vaccine for foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) effective in swine. The peptide immunogen has a G-H loop domain from the VP1 capsid protein of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) and a novel promiscuous T helper (Th) site for broad immunogenicity in multiple species. The G-H loop VP1 site was optimised for cross-reactivity to FMDV by the inclusion into the peptide of c...

The objectives of this study were to provide a summary quantification of the efficacy of FMD emergency vaccination based on a systematic review and a meta-analysis of available literature, and to further discuss the suitability of this review and meta-analysis to summarize and further interpret the results. Peer-reviewed, symposium, and unpublished studies were considered in the analysis. Clini...

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks recently affected 2 countries (Japan and South Korea) in eastern Asia that were free of FMD without vaccination. Analysis of viral protein 1 nucleotide sequences indicated that FMD serotype A and O viruses that caused these outbreaks originated in mainland Southeast Asia to which these viruses are endemic.
