Mycobacterium leprae organisms isolated from infected spleen and liver tissue by zonal centrifugation were shown to possess adjuvant activity. Histochemical examination of the footpad macrophage epithelioid granuloma showed that macrophages contained large amounts of hemosiderin after the injection of M. leprae and much smaller amounts after the injection of M. tuberculosis.
Multiplication of Mycobacteria leprae in the foot pads of mice has been reported by Shepard . 1 o The increase has been up to 1 ,000 fold. Other workers like Chatterji4 and BergeP have also reported successful transmission of M. leprae in ra ts and mice by using differen t s trains of animals and different food and technique. Mukherj i 6, 7 has not been able to confirm their works . This work ...
Buruli ulcer, caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans, is a necrotizing skin disease emerging particularly in West Africa. M. bovis BCG vaccine offers only short-term protection against experimental footpad infection of C57BL/6 mice with M. ulcerans, and the duration of this protection cannot be prolonged by a booster vaccination.
The aim of this study was to determine the effect housing system and age hens on welfare parameters prevalence keel bone damage in laying hens. In two systems were evaluated: aviary enriched cages. From each age, we used 50 randomly selected from different cages tiers. results showed significant differences between type damage. There no difference deviation systems, but higher fractures found s...
The activity of several diarylheptanoid derivatives (curcuminoids) was previously evaluated against Leishmania amazonensis promastigotes and among them the most active compound was the [1-(4-methoxy-phenyl)-7-(3,4-methoxy-4-hydroxy-phenyl)-1,6-heptadien-3, 5-dione]. This derivative was chosen to be assayed in vivo in a treatment trial. For these experiments, the curcuminoid compound was used in...
Dapsone (4,4'-diaminodiphenylsulfone), incorporated into the mouse chow in a concentration of 0.1 g/100 g of diet, was administered for 1 week to mice in which Mycobacterium leprae had multiplied to the level of 10(6) organisms/footpad. M. leprae were harvested from these and also from control mice, diluted serially, and inoculated into additional mice. The organisms recovered from untreated mi...
PURPOSE To study the mechanism of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) tolerance in a rat model of footpad injection endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU). METHODS EIU was produced by footpad injection of 1 mg/kg LPS in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Four experiments were undertaken in this study. First, on days 3, 7, 14, 28, 56, and 84 after LPS injection, the iris-ciliary body (ICB) was isolated. LPS tolerance-as...
The nucleoside hydrolase (NH) of Leishmania donovani (NH36) is a phylogenetic marker of high homology among Leishmania parasites. In mice and dog vaccination, NH36 induces a CD4+ T cell-driven protective response against Leishmania chagasi infection directed against its C-terminal domain (F3). The C-terminal and N-terminal domain vaccines also decreased the footpad lesion caused by Leishmania a...
Diesel exhaust particles (DEP), a well-known air pollutant, exacerbate type I hypersensitivity conditions, such as asthma and pollen allergy. In this study, we examined the effect of diesel exhaust (DE) exposure on delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH), a type IV hypersensitivity, induced with methyl-bovine serum albumin (mBSA) in C57BL/6 mice. Mice were exposed to DE containing DEP at a dose of ...
Nocardia brasiliensis is an intracellular microorganism and the most common etiologic agent of actinomycetoma in the Americas. Several intracellular pathogens induce an immunosuppressive microenvironment through increases in CD4+ Foxp3+ regulatory T cells (Treg), thus downregulating other T-cell subpopulations and assuring survival in the host. In this study, we determined whether N. brasiliens...
