Introduction Thrombotic microangiopathy is a term for a morphologic lesion characterized by platelet and fibrin thrombi involving the microvasculature. The morphologic lesions thus overlap between hemolytic syndrome (HUS), thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), and the lesions seen in scleroderma and malignant hypertension. HUS/TTP typically involves glomeruli and smaller vessels, whereas s...

To study fibrin incorporation into thrombi at different wall shear rates, a new method to study fibrin deposition on extracellular matrixes underlying stimulated endothelial cells under flow conditions was developed. For this method, we used fibrinogen labeled with peroxidase (Fg-PO). Fg-PO was fully exchangeable for Fg in the clotting assays tested, and PO activity was bound to fibrin-specific...

Acute laser injury to the tapetum of the feline retina produces thrombosis of the choriocapillaris. Early changes are characterized by the appearance of platelet-fibrin thrombi within capillary loops and disruption of endothelial integrity. By 4 days, thrombi have disappeared, and the endothelium shows regenerative changes. No endothelial cell mitotic activity is seen. The endothelial cytoplasm...

BACKGROUND Thrombolytic therapy is effective in selected patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Therefore, identification of a marker that reflects the age of thrombus is of particular concern. This pilot study aimed to identify a marker that reflects the time after onset in human aspirated DVT. METHODS We histologically and immunohistochemically analyzed 16 aspirated thrombi. The times fr...

OBJECTIVE Atherothrombosis is the main cause of myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke. Although the extrinsic (tissue factor-factor VIIa [FVIIa]) pathway is considered as a major trigger of coagulation in atherothrombosis, the role of the intrinsic coagulation pathway via coagulation FXII herein is unknown. Here, we studied the roles of the extrinsic and intrinsic coagulation pathways in th...

We report a case of chronic ulcerative colitis complicated by clinical evidence of disseminated intravascular coagulation and pathological evidence of intestinal ischaemia secondary to venular and capillary fibrin thrombi. This may well represent an example of univisceral Shwartzman reaction occurring in a sensitized target organ.

Pre-eclampsia complicated by deep jaundice occurred in a previously healthy primigravida. The main aetiological factor was disseminated intravascular coagulation; this caused both haemolysis and liver cell necrosis. Liver biopsy showed fibrin thrombi in the capillaries with microhaemorrhages and loss of periportal liver cells. The jaundice was attributed to both haemolytic and hepatocellular pr...

Rectal biopsies from five patients with clindamycin-associated colitis were studied with the intention of identifying fibrin thrombi in capillaries. Capillary thrombosis was present in all five cases, three with pseudomembranous colitis and two with non-specific colitis. The significance of capillary thrombosis and its relationship to other ischaemic lesions of the gut are discussed.

Computed tomography (CT) is the current standard for time-critical decision-making in stroke patients, informing decisions on thrombolytic therapy with tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), which has a narrow therapeutic index. We aimed to develop a CT-based method to directly visualize cerebrovascular thrombi and guide thrombolytic therapy. Glycol-chitosan-coated gold nanoparticles (GC-AuNPs) we...

BACKGROUND Plaque rupture with subsequent thrombosis is recognized as the underlying pathophysiology of most acute coronary syndromes and stroke. Thus, direct thrombus visualization may be beneficial for both diagnosis and guidance of therapy. We sought to test the feasibility of direct imaging of acute and subacute thrombosis using MRI together with a novel fibrin-binding gadolinium-labeled pe...
