BACKGROUND The study of near-fatal suicide attempters may provide insight into the minds of suicidal subjects. Our aim is to test the hypothesis that mental pain is a general risk factor for suicidal behavior and communication difficulties are a particular risk factor for medically serious suicidal behavior. METHODS Thirty five subjects who made medically serious suicide attempts were compare...
To help inform the evaluation design for CalMHSA's suicide prevention (SP) and early intervention initiatives, a review of program evaluation literature was done to assess program effectiveness and identify previously used evaluation methodologies. Using evidence from the literature review, the authors provide an overview of the epidemiology of suicides and of non-fatal self-inflicted injuries ...
Declaration of interest None. Fundingdetailed in Acknowledgements. Suicide reduction has recently become the aim of governmental strategies in, for example, England (Department of Health, 1993, 2002), the USA (Vastag, 2001), Australasia and Nordic countries (Taylor et al, 1997), and global strategies through a campaign of the World Health Organization (2004). Background: Varenicline was approved for use in the United States in 2006, and has proven to be the most effective smoking cessation therapy currently available. Unfortunately, there have been some recent concerns regarding its safety. The FDA added a black box warning to varenicline in July, 2009, advising patients and providers of the possible link between varenicline and suicidal ideation an...
BACKGROUND Injury related to self-harm is one of the leading causes of global disease burden. As a formative work for a programme to implement comprehensive mental healthcare in a rural district in Ethiopia, we determined the 12-month prevalence of non-fatal suicidal behaviour as well as factors associated with this behaviour to understand the potential burden of the behaviour in the district. ...
Suicide in later life is a global public health problem. The aim of this review was to conduct a systematic analysis of studies with comparison groups that examined the associations between social factors and suicidal behavior (including ideation, non-fatal suicidal behavior, or deaths) among individuals aged 65 and older. Our search identified only 16 articles (across 14 independent samples) t...
Flecainide acetate is a potent class IC antiarrhythmic agent used mainly for the treatment of supraventricular arrhythmias. Acute overdose of this drug is rare but frequently fatal. The clinical course of a patient that ingested a large quantity of flecainide as a suicide attempt is described and current therapeutic strategies discussed. (JAccid Emerg Med 1998;15:423-425)
Suicide was initiated by several incisions in the skin; the resulting hypovolemia resulted in fatal hypothermia. The unusual autopsy findings in this case due to hypothermia were focal hemorrhages and necrosis of the pancreas and hemorrhagic infarction of the descendending colon. The pathophysiological relevance of the autopsy and histological findings are discussed.
Nomenclature used to describe acts of self-harm without fatal consequences varies considerably. The term 'non-suicidal self-injury' (NSSI) offers an opportunity to clarify study in this field, dichotomising the presence or absence of suicidal intent. This may improve consistency in reporting suicide and self-injurious behaviour with implications for management and prognosis.
BACKGROUND Stressful life events have been shown to be associated with altered risk of various health consequences. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the emotional stress evoked by a prostate cancer diagnosis increases the immediate risks of cardiovascular events and suicide. METHODS AND FINDINGS We conducted a prospective cohort study by following all men in Sweden who ...
