This paper studies the solution behavior of a system of two coupled elastic beams connected vertically by springs. With the viscous damping collocated with the ends of the springs, the system energy decays exponentially. Our goal is to find the optimal spring-damper location which yields the best energy decay rate of the beam-spring system.

In this paper we investigate a class of combined discrete-continuous mechanical systems consisting of a continuous elastic structure and a nite number of concentrated masses, elastic supports and linear oscillators of arbitrary dimension. After the motion equations for such combined systems are derived, they are formulated as an abstract evolution equation on an appropriately deened Hilbert spa...

We consider a free boundary problem modeling electrostatic microelectromechanical systems. The model consists of a fourth-order damped wave equation for the elastic plate displacement which is coupled to an elliptic equation for the electrostatic potential. We first review some recent results on existence and nonexistence of steady-states as well as on local and global well-posedness of the dyn...

Undulatory motion is common to many creatures across many scales, from sperm to snakes. These organisms must push off against their external environment, such as a viscous medium, grains of sand, or a high-friction surface; additionally they must work to bend their own body. A full understanding of undulatory motion, and locomotion in general, requires the characterization of the material prope...

Elastic robot joints gain in importance since the nowadays robotics tends to the lightweight structures. The lightweight metals and composite materials deployed not only in the links but also in the joint assemblies affect the overall stiffness of robotic system. The elastic joints provide the loaded robot motion with additional compliance and can lead to significant control errors and vibratio...

This paper proves that any initial condition in the energy space for the plate equation with square root damping ζ̈ − ρ∆ζ̇ +∆2ζ = u on a smooth bounded domain, with hinged boundary conditions ζ = ∆ζ = 0, can be steered to zero by a square integrable input function u supported in arbitrarily small time interval [0, T ] and subdomain. As T tends to zero, for initial states with unit energy norm, th...

In this paper, we present an analytical method for solving a well-posed boundary value problem of mathematical physics governing the vibration characteristics of an internal flow propelled fluid-structure interaction where the pipeline segment is idealized as an elastic hollow beam conveying an incompressible fluid on a viscoelastic foundation. The effect of Coriolis and damping forces on the o...

The null controllability problem for a structurally damped abstract wave equation–a socalled elastic model–is considered with a view towards obtain optimal rates of blowup for the associated minimal energy function Emin(T ), as terminal time T ↓ 0. Key use is made of the underlying analyticity of the elastic generator A, as well as of the explicit characterization of its domain of definition. W...
