High endothelial cell density (ECD) is essential for the corneal graft clarity. We evaluated ECD loss in 120 eyes that underwent penetrating keratoplasty (PK) in Eye Clinic Svjetlost in a one year follow up period. Patients were divided into 3 groups of high (N = 35), intermediate (N = 31) and low risk (N = 54) for graft failure. Postoperative central endothelial density, coefficient of variati...

Pattern recognition receptors confer plant resistance to pathogen infection by recognizing the conserved pathogen-associated molecular patterns. The cell surface receptor chitin elicitor receptor kinase 1 of Arabidopsis (AtCERK1) directly binds chitin through its lysine motif (LysM)-containing ectodomain (AtCERK1-ECD) to activate immune responses. The crystal structure that we solved of an AtCE...

Electronic circular dichroism (ECD) parameters of the disulphide chromophore have been calculated for dihydrogen disulphide, dimethyl disulphide, and cystine using density-functional theory, coupled-cluster theory, and multiconfigurational self-consistent field theory. The objective is twofold: first, to examine the performance of the Coulomb-attenuated CAM-B3LYP functional for the calculation ...

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. We report a fatal case of ECD with extensive cardiac involvement associated with a marginal zone lymphoma and monoclonal proteinemia in a young man. This is the first reported association of ECD with a monoclonal gammopathy or a lymphoma.

QUESTIONS UNDER STUDY The aim of this study was to evaluate risk factors and outcome of expanded-criteria donor (ECD) kidney transplants in patients with low immunological risk. METHODS We evaluated graft survival and graft function in 265 recipients with low immunological risk defined as the absence of pretransplant donor-specific HLA antibodies. RESULTS A total of 112 (42%) kidneys derive...

BACKGROUND Donors after brain death develop a systemic proinflammatory state that may predispose the kidneys to injury after transplantation. Because it is not known whether this inflammatory environment similarly affects the kidneys from expanded criteria donor (ECD) and standard criteria donors (SCD), we sought to evaluate differences in the gene expression of inflammatory cytokines in preimp...

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare histiocytic disorder, characterized by the xanthomatous infiltration of tissues by CD68-positive and CD1a-/CD100-negative foamy histiocytes. In childhood, ECD is exceptionally rare, and only a dozen cases have been published so far. The cooccurence of Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) and ECD is even rarer. Here, we report a 2-year-old boy, the youngest...

Two patients with a cerebral embolism were evaluated by using both 99mTc-ethyl cysteinate dimer (ECD, or Bicisate) and 99mTc-hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (HMPAO) single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). In one patient, 99mTc-ECD SPECT images revealed hypoactivity in a reflow hyperemic area where an infarct was seen later on CT scans. In another patient, a reperfused area showed hyp...

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. It is characterized by multiple xanthogranulomatous masses throughout the body, predominantly in the tibia. One of the characteristic radiological findings of the lesions associated with ECD is a "coated artery," which is often observed in the aorta. Although approximately one-fourth of ECD cases involve the central nerv...

Compared with adults, pediatric mastocytosis has a relatively favorable prognosis. Interestingly, a difference was also observed in the status of c-kit mutations according to the age of onset. Although most adult patients have a D(816)V mutation in phosphotransferase domain (PTD), we have described that half of the children carry mutations in extracellular domain (ECD). KIT-ECD versus KIT-PTD m...
