We treated a 65-year-old woman with familial cylindromatosis, with cylindromas covering the entire scalp. Subgaleal tumor excision and split skin grafting was performed. The graft take was deemed to be excellent, with almost 100% coverage 2.5 weeks after operation, no complications and a satisfying esthetic result.
The nose is a common site for basal and squamous cell carcinomas. Surgical excision can leave a defect that is appropriate for reconstruction with full thickness skin grafting. Tie-over dressings have gained popularity in this setting. We propose that steri-strips alone provide the necessary support to facilitate excellent graft take.
The derivation of induced human pluripotent stem cells (hiPS) has generated significant enthusiasm particularly for the prospects of cell-based therapy. But there are concerns about the suitability of iPS cells for in vivo applications due in part to the introduction of potentially oncogenic transcription factors via viral vectors. Recently developed lentiviral vectors allow the excision of vir...
Recently, there have been more reports of cardiac valve infections due to the increasing number of intravenous (IV) drug abusers and chronic renal failure patients. Among cardiac valves, tricuspid valve is most commonly affected in the course of endocarditis. Appropriate management of these patients is a challenging and controversial issue in the field of cardiac surgery. Treatment options in s...
Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is very rare tumor of dermis layer of skin with the incidence of only 1 case per million per year. DFSP rarely leads to a metastasis (Less than 5% have metastasis), but DFSP can recur locally. We publish a rare case of a recurrent dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and its management with radical excision and interval skin grafting.
PURPOSE To review records of 14 patients with aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) of the spine. METHODS Using the Scottish Bone Tumour Registry for the period of October 1952 to November 2005, records of 9 females and 5 males aged 8 to 63 (mean, 25.3) years who had ABCs of the spine and were followed up for a mean of 7.1 years were reviewed. RESULTS The most commonly involved site was the lumbar v...
We report two patients, each with a giant-cell tumour of the distal radius treated by curettage and bone grafting. Local recurrence of the tumour occurred in the autograft and in the adjacent soft tissues in both patients, and was successfully treated by local excision; one patient also had radiation therapy. Both remain well 20 years and five years later.
Advances in burn care have a long history with accelerated development within the last 50 years. The principal areas of burn treatment include dressings, antimicrobials, fluid resuscitation, burn wound excision, grafting of skin, and skin substitution. This review presents a historical outline of these areas, their current status, and prospects for the future of burn care.
We present a case of scalp reconstruction using Integra and split skin grafting after extensive excision of melanoma in a previously irradiated field. Radical resection of malignancy and application of Integra, a dermal substitute, was performed. Following histological confirmation of complete excision, a split-thickness skin graft (SSG) was applied. After 14 months the patient remains fully he...
