The debate on deindustrialization assumes that domestic industry is a leading sector and produces positive externalities for the whole economy. This paper will partially refute this. Since the early 1990’s, most developed and emerging economies have been subjected to two paradoxes: the paradox of Solow, which calls into question the relationship between ICT investment and productivity gains, an...

Introduction The debate about the responsibility of museums to respect Indigenous peoples’ rights (Kelly and Gordon; Butts) has caught our attention on the basis of our previous research experience with regard to the protection of the tangible and intangible heritage of the San (former hunter gatherers) in Southern Africa (Martin and Vermeylen; Vermeylen, Contextualising; Vermeylen, Life Force;...

Surveillance can be based, in some change-point detection problems, on a sequence of invariant statistics. Gordon and Pollak (1997) prove that, under certain conditions, the Average Run Length (ARL) to false alarm of invariance-based Shiryayev-Roberts detection schemes is asymptotically the same as that of the dual classical scheme that is based on the original sequence of observations. In this...

Following our previous research on developing a dynamic virtual city system (Sheffield Urban Contextual Databank, SUCoD), the paper reports on a study of applying the virtual city resources to an undergraduate urban design course. The study focuses on how the multi-dimensional and multiple types of urban contextual data can be used by student designers directly for urban visual analysis and des...

This paper sets out to address the issue of equity duration, one of several risk measures available for asset and liability management. Equity duration, as derived from the use of traditional dividend discount models, results in extremely long duration estimates for equities often in excess of 50 years for growth stocks. Leibowitz, in his seminal paper (1986), identified an alternative framewor...

The most profound change in the relationship between humans and their environment was the introduction of agriculture and pastoralism. With this millennia lasting economic shift from simple food acquisition to complex food production humankind paved the way for its grand transitional process from mobile groups to sedentary villages, towns and ultimately cities, and from egalitarian bands to chi...

In this paper, the (G′/G)-expansion method is applied to seek traveling wave solutions of the combined and the double combined sinh-cosh-Gordon equations. This traveling wave solutions are expressed by the hyperbolic functions and the trigonometric functions. It is shown that the proposed method is direct, effective and more general. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 35K01; 35J05.

We consider positive, radial and exponentially decaying steady state solutions of the general reaction-diffusion and Klein-Gordon type equations and present an explicit construction of infinite-dimensional invariant manifolds in the vicinity of these solutions. The result is a precise stable manifold theorem for the reaction-diffusion equation and a precise center-stable manifold theorem for th...

Schur's partition theorem states that the number of partitions of n into distinct parts ≡ 1, 2 (mod 3) equals the number of partitions of n into parts which differ by 3, where the inequality is strict if a part is a multiple of 3. We establish a double bounded refined version of this theorem by imposing one bound on the parts ≡ 0, 1 (mod 3) and another on the parts ≡ 2(mod 3), and by keeping tr...

The change of signature of a metric is explained using simple examples and methods. The Klein-Gordon field on a signature-changing background is discussed, and it is shown how the approach of Dray et al. can be corrected to ensure that the KleinGordon equation holds. Isotropic cosmologies are discussed, and it is shown how the approach of Ellis et al. can be corrected to ensure that the Einstei...
