We develop a general computational approach, based on the discrete dipole approximation, for the study of radiation dynamics near or inside an object with arbitrary linear dielectric permittivity, and magnetic permeability tensors. Our method can account for dispersion and losses and provides insight on the role of local-field corrections in discrete magnetodielectric structures. We illustrate ...

Among the most popular approaches used for simulating plasmonic systems, the discrete dipole approximation suffers from poorly scaling volume discretization and limited near-field accuracy. We demonstrate that transformation to a surface integral formulation improves scalability and convergence and provides a flexible geometric approximation allowing, e.g., to investigate the influence of fabri...

The electromagnetic field distribution for thin metal nanowires is found, by using the discrete dipole approximation. The plasmon polariton modes in wires are numerically simulated. These modes are found to be dependent on the incident light wavelength and direction of propagation. The existence of localized plasmon modes and strong local field enhancement in percolation nanowire composites is ...

A novel method to produce solution-phase triangular silver nanoparticles is presented. Ag nanoparticles are prepared by nanosphere lithography and are subsequently released into solution. The resulting nanoparticles are asymmetrically functionalized to produce either single isolated nanoparticles or dimer pairs. The structural and optical properties of Ag nanoparticles have been characterized. ...

Particle shape and aggregation have a strong influence on the spectral profiles of infrared phonon bands of solid dust grains. In this paper, we use a discrete dipole approximation (DDSCAT; [1]), a cluster-of-spheres code following the Gérardy-Ausloos approach (MQAGGR; [2]) and a T-matrix method (SCSMTM; [3]) for calculating IR extinction spectra of aggregates of spherical silicon carbide (SiC)...

The effect of diffractive coupling on the collective plasmon line shape of linear arrays of Ag nanoparticles fabricated by electron beam lithography has been investigated using Rayleigh scattering spectroscopy. The array spectra exhibit an intricate multi-peak structure, including a narrow mode that gains strength for interparticle distances that are close to the single particle resonance wavel...

A novel hydrothermal layer-by-layer processing method for the fabrication of core/alloy nanoparticles with highly tunable surface plasmon resonance is described. For a model system of Au/Au(x)Ag(1-x), the processing temperature, alloy composition, and alloy thickness resulted in unique and tailorable plasmonic signatures. The discrete dipole approximation and selective alloy etching were used t...

In this paper, a system with spin S=3/2 with general isotropic nearest neighbor exchange within a mean field approximation possess is discnssed. We derive equations describing non-Heisenberg isotropic model using coherent states of SU(4) group in real parameters and then obtain dispersion equations of spin wave of dipole and quadrupole branches for a small linear excitation from the ground state.

We develop a numerical technique for simulating metamaterial electromagnetic response based on an adaptation of the discrete dipole approximation (DDA). Our approach reduces each constituent metamaterial element within the composite to a point dipole with electric and magnetic polarizabilities, rather than assuming a homogenized effective material. We first validate the approach by computing th...

We show theoretically that a two-dimensional periodic array of metallic nanocubes in close proximity to a metallic film acts as a metasurface with tunable absorbance. The presence of a metallic film underneath the array of plasmonic nanocubes leads to an impedance matched plasmonic metasurface enhancing up to 4 times the absorbance of incident radiation, in the spectral region below 500 nm. The...
