Of 149 patients with suspected cytomegalovirus (CMV) gastrointestinal disease, 51 (36%) confirmed cases, 6 (4%) probable cases, and 64 (45%) instances of non-CMV gastrointestinal disease were analyzed using the CMV antigenemia assay; 22 patients (5%) with indeterminate gastrointestinal disease were excluded. The sensitivity and specificity of the CMV antigenemia assay (defined as detection of >...

The Digene Hybrid Capture system cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA (version 2.0), Roche CMV UL54 analyte-specific reagent, and QIAGEN RealArt CMV LightCycler PCR reagent tests were compared using whole-virus standards and plasma specimens collected from allogeneic-stem-cell transplant recipients. PCR assays showed better speed, sensitivity, and specificity.

We compared two protocols for extracting DNA from dried blood spots for cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA detection and quantification by real-time PCR. Both extraction methods were reliable for the retrospective diagnosis of CMV congenital infection. Quantification of CMV DNA was valuable after normalization of viral loads with albumin gene PCR amplification results.

A total of 2,718 blood samples were analyzed in five virological laboratories for the presence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) by in-house tests and one standardized plasma PCR assay. Results from in-house tests showed remarkable variability. Detection of CMV pp65 antigen or DNA from cells was more sensitive than that by plasma CMV PCR assay.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Steroid-resistance presents a management challenge in ulcerative colitis. How steroid-resistance occurs is unknown, but cytomegalovirus infection, often unrecognised, may be the cause in some patients. Current evidence and therapeutic recommendations are examined. METHODS A systematic review of PubMed and EMBASE databases was performed. Search and exclusion criteria are de...

Tumor specimens from patients with adenocarcinoma of the colon or rectum were examined for the presence of cytomegalovirus (CMV), and specimens of normal mucosa from the same patients were studied in parallel. Frozen sections of 14 specimens were made and the presence of CMV mRNA assayed by in situ hybridisation using 3H-labelled CMV-DNA as a probe. Nine of these sections were also tested for c...

Background: Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the major complication of viral infection in immunocompromised patients. This opportunistic associated with high morbidity and mortality transplanted recipients. Objectives: The present study aimed to determine CMV burden assess clinical outcome liver recipients reactivated at Nemazi Hospital, Shiraz, Iran. Methods: retrospective examined 657 patients ...

background : cytomegalovirus (cmv) is the most common cause of congenital infection, with increased morbidity and mortality at birth. the risk of intrauterine infection largely depends on the time of maternal infection during pregnancy. currently, no national screening test for cmv infection is available during pregnancy in iran. the aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of cmv ...

Cytomegalovirus is a type of herpes viruses which can cause a primary infection or reactivate after a latent period. It can involve all organs including the gastrointestinal system. The most common presentation of GI involvement is colitis. In this report, we describe a middle-aged woman presenting with diarrhea, ascites, and edema in both upper and lower extremities.  She had no history of im...
