Large-scale computational models have become common tools for analyzing complex manmade systems. However, when coupled with optimization or uncertainty quantification methods in order to conduct extensive model exploration and analysis, the computational expense quickly becomes intractable. Furthermore, these models may have both continuous and discrete parameters. One common approach to mitiga...

which connict with them are activated. Thus, in example a) of Figure 5, new values for feasible and preferred intervals of Pier-width are found by propagating the constraint from Beam-depth. Preferences represent optimal values, and the closer the value is to the preference the better the criterion is adhered to. When preferences are in connict, they are therefore not dropped, but weakened so t...

This paper considers the problem of invoking auxiliary, unobservable variables to facilitate the structuring of causal tree models for a given set of continuous variables. Paralleling the treatment of bi-valued variables in [Pearl 1986], we show that if a collection of coupled variables are governed by a joint normal distribution and a tree-structured representation exists, then both the topolo...

We show how continuous-variable systems can allow the direct communication of messages with an acceptable degree of privacy. This is possible by combining a suitable phasespace encoding of the plain message with real-time checks of the quantum communication channel. The resulting protocol works properly when a small amount of noise affects the quantum channel. If this noise is non-tolerable, th...

Research on Symbolic Probabilistic Inference (SPI) [2, 3) has provided an algorithm for re solving general queries in Bayesian networks. SPI applies the concept of dependency directed backward search to probabilistic in ference, and is incremental with respect to both queries and observations. Unlike tra ditional Bayesian network inferencing algo rithms, SPI algorithm is goal directed, per...

We discuss the criteria presently used for evaluating the efficiency of quantum teleportation schemes for continuous variables. It is argued that the fidelity criterion used so far has some severe drawbacks, and that a fidelity value larger than 2/3 is actually required for successful quantum teleportation. This value has never been reached experimentally so far.
