It is demonstrated here that cultured fibroblasts release into their medium a nondialyzable, protease-sensitive factor(s) capable of promoting the adhesion and spreading of virus-transformed rat fibroblasts on a plastic substratum. A relatively sensitive biological assay is described for quantitation of the adhesion-promoting factor (APF) activity in serum-free, conditioned medium harvested fro...

Hypoxia to the tissue plays a significant role in ischemia. In spite of the development of various in vitro models of neuronal cultures to study the mechanism of ischemia-induced cell death, not much is known about the role of protein expression in ischemia induced pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells. Present study was done to study the expressions of proteins in hypoxia induced PC12 cells and after ...

Rat spinal cord cells maintained in neuron-rich cultures were exposed to extracts of skeletal muscle or to medium conditioned by non-neuronal cells. The conditioned media enhanced neuronal acetylcholine (ACh) synthesis, choline acetyltransferase activity, and protein synthesis, and decreased gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) synthesis. Muscle extract prepared from newborn rats produced similar enh...

A novel promoter in IS10R (OUTIIp) has been found in one of its ends in an inverted position relative to promoter pOUT. OUTIIp shows characteristics similar to those of rpoS-dependent promoters such as a gearbox expression pattern. It is under catabolite repression and positively regulated by ppGpp or conditioned media. This opens new challenges in IS10R transposition.

BACKGROUND The influence of lung fibroblasts on lung cancer progression is not fully understood. METHODS Lung fibroblasts (HFL1, MRC5, and IMR90 cells) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)-derived cell lines (A549, EBC1, and HI1017) were cultured under serum-free conditions, and the resulting culture media were designated "cell-conditioned media". Cell survival (viability) was assessed by W...

Many studies investigating the bystander effect have used ionizing radiation to evaluate this phenomenon, whereas very few have determined whether genotoxic chemicals are also capable of inducing this effect. Here, we show that two such chemicals, mitomycin C, a bifunctional alkylating agent and phleomycin, a glycopeptide antibiotic of the bleomycin family, cause normal human B lymphoblastoid c...

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a promising cell population for cell-based bone repair due to their proliferative potential, ability to differentiate into bone-forming osteoblasts, and their secretion of potent trophic factors that stimulate angiogenesis and neovascularization. To promote bone healing, autogenous or allogeneic MSCs are transplanted into bone defects after differentiation to v...
