The Phadebact and Bactigen reagents were evaluated for detection of Neisseria meningitidis in cerebrospinal fluids. The Bactigen test yielded stronger agglutination reactions from clinical specimens and was significantly more sensitive when used with whole-cell suspensions and purified antigens.

Isolation of Legionella pneumophila from a transtracheal aspirate was achieved by using simple in vitro culture methods. Clinical microbiologists should routinely culture for this organism from appropriate body fluids obtained from normally sterile areas.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW To highlight some of the recent key issues surrounding crystalloid and colloid fluid management of critically ill patients. RECENT FINDINGS Significant developments have been made in the understanding of ionic balance of fluids and their effects on acid-base, the role of hydration and overhydration, alkalinization of fluids in patients at high risk for contrast induced nephr...

The debate over which fluid is most suitable for resuscitation of hypovolaemia has been going on for more than five decades. The choice of colloid or crystalloid varies; largely depending on personal preference, clinical experience, availability, and cost (1). Although the evidence for, and understanding of, different fluids has increased, there is an urgent need for appropriately sized, prospe...

in this paper, the effects of adding nanoparticles including tio2 to a fluid media for purpose of free convection heat transfer improvement were analyzed. the free convection was assumed to be in laminar flow regime and the solutions and calculations were all done by the integral method. water, as a newtonian fluid, was considered the base fluid (water) and all the thermo physical properties of...

The use of flow cytometry in the clinical laboratory has grown substantially in the past decade. Flow cytometric analysis provides a rapid qualitative and quantitative description of multiple characteristics of individual cells. For example, it is possible to detect the cell size and granularity, aspects of DNA and RNA content and the presence of cell surface and nuclear markers which are used ...

While clinical transcriptomics methods vary widely, a common characteristic is the need for chemical processing of extremely heterogeneous fluids (e.g., whole blood) prior to analysis. Here, we introduce the first world-to-digital microfluidic (DMF)-based method for chemical processing of RNA in blood. This sample-to-answer system has great potential for rapid characterization of novel and emer...

Despite its serious limitations, measuring the concentrations of homovanillic acid (HVA) in body fluids is perhaps the most direct method currently available to assess the changing activity of central dopamine (DA) neurons in living humans. The concentrations of HVA in body fluids are determined not only by the activity of central DA neurons but also by a number of unrelated factors such as the...
