Whereas chromosomal translocations are common pathogenetic events in cancer, mechanisms that promote them are poorly understood. To elucidate translocation mechanisms in mammalian cells, we developed high-throughput, genome-wide translocation sequencing (HTGTS). We employed HTGTS to identify tens of thousands of independent translocation junctions involving fixed I-SceI meganuclease-generated D...

Soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) is a major crop species and, therefore, a major target of genomic and genetic research. However, in contrast to other plant species, relatively few chromosomal aberrations have been identified and characterized in soybean. This is due in part to the difficulty of cytogenetic analysis of its small, morphologically homogeneous chromosomes. The recent development o...

Translocation, the intentional release of captive-propagated and/or wild-caught animals into the wild in an attempt to establish, reestablish, or augment a population, is a commonly used approach to species conservation. Despite the frequent mention of translocation as an aid in threatened or endangered species recovery plans, translocations have resulted in the establishment of few sustainable...

Background: Mental retardation is defined as impaired mental capacity and ability to comply with environmental and social conditions. Chromosomal abnormalities are the most important causes of mental retardation. Carriers of balanced chromosomal translocation are phenotypically normal, although they may be at risk of infertility, recurrent miscarriage or giving birth to mentally retarded childr...

BACKGROUND An increased incidence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) has been reported in farmers and other occupational groups working with pesticides. In these individuals, an increased prevalence of the chromosomal translocation t(14;18)(q32;q21), one of the most common chromosomal abnormalities in NHL, has been detected in peripheral blood lymphocytes. This translocation juxtaposes the antiapo...

An extremely rare case of a child with three balanced reciprocal translocations involving six different autosomes is described. These abnormalities have apparently arisen de novo and seem to have only relatively minor phenotypic effects. The meiotic possibilities are discussed and cytogenetic markers suggest that the damage may have occurred in a paternal gamete.

We present a Bayesian approach to the problem of inferring the number of inversions and translocations separating two species. The main reason for developing this method is that it will allow us to test hypotheses about the underlying mechanisms, such as the distribution of inversion track lengths or rate constancy among lineages. Here, we apply these methods to comparative maps of eggplant and...

Three males with Robertsonian translocations were found in a sample of 1115 males examined for military service. One was a 14/15 translocation, and two were 13/14 translocations. One was spontaneous and two familial. The segregation rate of the translocations did not deviate significantly from unity in the sibships where the mother was the carrier, whereas all five children had the translocatio...

The soybean variety Forrest contains an aberrant allele for the Gy3 glycinin gene. The aberrant allele is designated gy3 because mRNA for the G3 glycinin subunit is reduced to below detectable amounts in the seed. Molecular and genetic characterization of gy3 show it to be associated with a chromosomal rearrangement that causes the 5' halves and 3' halves of the gene to become separated from on...
