This study reports a case of severe anterior compression of the spinal cord by a calcified herniated thoracic disc at the T9/10 level in a 46-year-old woman. She underwent resection of the calcified herniated thoracic disc and the integrated dura, using a microscopically assisted mini-open transthoracic approach. The remaining dura mater was shaped and repaired by alternate overlapping without ...

The objective of this work is to quantify age-related differences in the characteristics and coupling of cerebral arterial inflow and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics. To this end, 3T phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging blood and CSF flow data of eleven young (24 ± 3 years) and eleven elderly subjects (70 ± 5 years) with a comparable sex-ratio were acquired. Flow waveforms and their fre...

The cerebrospinal fluid concentration of Glutamine and Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were studied in patients with pyogenic and tubercular meningitis. Significant increase in Glutamine and LDH level (P<0.001) were observed in the test group when compared to the control group. LDH and glutamine may not be useful in differentiating viral from other meningitis. It may act as corroborative evidence o...

A simple and rapid detection of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage would benefit spine surgeons making critical postoperative decisions on patient care. We have assessed novel approaches to selectively determine CSF β2-transferrin (β2TF), an asialo-transferrin (aTF) biomarker, without interference from serum sialo-transferrin (sTF) in test samples. First, we performed mild periodate oxidation to...

The size of head compartments (head and brain volume, intracranial volume, gray and white matter volume, cerebrospinal fluid volume) and their ratios were determined on the basis of magnetic resonance images of the head acquired in a reference population of 502 healthy subjects. Age-matched subgroups were selected to reveal gender-related differences and changes with age. Normative data are pro...

The cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteome is of great interest for investigation of diseases and conditions involving the CNS. However, the presence of high-abundance proteins (HAPs) can interfere with the detection of low-abundance proteins, potentially hindering the discovery of new biomarkers. Therefore, an assessment of the CSF subproteome composition requires depletion strategies. Existing me...

Tau protein is a microtubule-associated molecule playing a crucial role in maintenance of neuronal integrity and in many neurodegenerative processes; its pathology has become a hallmark feature at the tissue level. The aim of the study was to estimate total tau and phospho-tau (Thr181) concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid of healthy population. Cerebrospinal fluid samples were taken from 129 s...

CXCL13 in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) could be an important component for diagnosing Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB). Levels of intrathecal CXCL13 were determined for 58 LNB patients and 210 controls; sensitivity was 88% and specificity was 89% (cutoff, 250 pg of CXCL13/ml of CSF). Elevated levels of CXCL13 can aid in the diagnosis of LNB, but levels should be interpreted with care.

Phosphorylation plays a critical role in regulating protein function and thus influences a vast spectrum of cellular processes. With the advent of modern bioanalytical technologies, examination of protein phosphorylation on a global scale has become one of the major research areas. Phosphoproteins are found in biological fluids and interrogation of the phosphoproteome in biological fluids prese...
