Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is associated with increased risk of cerebrovascular disease; however Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis (CVST) is rarely associated with HIV-related cerebrovascular events. We describe two cases of HIV-positive patients who, at the same time, presented to our hospital with deep cerebral venous thrombosis and stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Little is known about the gender-specific manifestations of cerebral venous and sinus thrombosis, a disease that is much more common in women than men. METHODS We used data of the International Study on Cerebral Vein and Dural sinus Thrombosis (ISCVT), a multicenter prospective observational study, to analyze gender-specific differences in clinical presentation, etiolog...

Cerebral vein thrombosis, also called superior sagittal sinus thrombosis, is a well recognized clinical and radiologic entity associated with a variety of medical disorders. We report a patient with fatal cerebral vein thrombosis following myelography, in whom the cause was familial antithrombin III (AT3) deficiency. Unsuspected AT3 deficiency should be considered in cases of unexplained cerebr...

Primary varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection, predominantly in the pediatric population, presents with pyrexia and a classic pruritic vesicular rash. In adults, although less common, it is more severe and linked to more complications. Neurological complications, which account for less than 1% of all VZV complications, include meningitis, encephalitis, arterial vasculopathy, and venous thrombo...

Decrease in the activity of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) increases level homocysteine. MTHFR C677T gene polymorphism has been reported as a well-known cause elevated homocysteine associated with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST). A 34-year-old male was admitted severe headache after generalized seizure. Brain magnetic resonance venography showed thrombus superior sagittal s...

RATIONALE Venous sinus thrombosis is a special type of cerebrovascular disease. Its incidence is low and its symptoms are lack of specificity. And its early diagnosis and treatment are very difficult. PATIENT CONCERNS This paper reported a rare case of a 43-year-old female who presented with cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) complicated with cerebral artery infarction and secondary epileptic s...

A 21-year-old woman was admitted with right hemiparesis, bilateral papilledema, negative myoclonus of right upper extremity, and bilateral pyramidal findings. An MRI showed no venous flow in the inferior sagittal sinus. Lipoprotein a (Lp [a]) level was high and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) was found. The coexistence of IDA and Lp (a) in patients with cerebral venous thrombosis is a very rare co...

Cavernous sinus thrombosis is a rare, potentially fatal cause of cerebral venous thrombosis. Infectious causes typically arise from the mid face, orbit, or sinonasal region. We present a case of bilateral cavernous sinus and superior ophthalmic thrombosis secondary to an extreme case of facial cellulitis.

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is a challenging condition because of its variability of clinical symptoms and signs. It is very often unrecognised at initial presentation. All age groups can be affected. Large sinuses such as the superior sagittal sinus are most frequently involved. Extensive collateral circulation within the cerebral venous system allows for a significant degree of compensat...
